answer text
The UK has committed £2.1 billion since 2020 to help countries fight COVID and manage its impacts and we have donated over 85 million vaccine doses, which helped protect medical staff and vulnerable people, when there was a shortage of vaccines. As global vaccine supply now outstrips demand, the UK is supporting low-income countries to vaccinate their high-risk populations through the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership.

Therapeutics and diagnostics are a fundamental part of pandemic response, both for COVID-19 and future health threats. That is why the UK co-chaired, with South Africa, the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator Working Group on Therapeutics and Diagnostics and in September, published its report setting out recommendations.

The UK is committed to acting on lessons from COVID-19 to ensure we are better prepared for the next health threat. The UK welcomes the new Financial Intermediary Fund for Pandemic Preparedness and is closely engaging on the development of a Pandemic Instrument to help strengthen international collaboration against future health threats.

answer text
The UK is committed to ending the acute phase of the pandemic as soon as possible, and strongly supports the COVAX Facility as a key mechanism to deliver this. COVAX has now delivered over one billion vaccine doses to 144 countries and territories. The UK is among the largest donors to COVAX's Advance Market Commitment, committing £548 million to supply vaccines in up to 92 low and middle income countries. The UK has also donated more than 30 million doses, with millions more to be sent globally in 2022.

Many factors contribute to vaccination coverage levels, including supply, health system capacity and demand. The UK worked closely with the Independent Allocation of Vaccines Group established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to develop WHO's global vaccination strategy and endorsed it at the G20 Leaders' Summit in October 2021. The UK recognises its recommendation for 70% vaccination coverage as well as its advice that countries need to set their own national targets based on local context and demographics.

With UK Government support, a global licencing deal helped transfer AZ's technology to other manufacturers and establish 20 supply chains across the world, including the Serum Institute of India. Around 2.5 billion Oxford-AstraZeneca doses have been delivered at cost to more than 170 countries. Almost two-thirds of these have gone to low and lower-middle-income countries, including more than 30 million doses donated by the UK through COVAX or bilaterally.

The UK has provided technical support to develop business cases for Biovac to manufacture vaccines in South Africa, Institut Pasteur in Senegal and to the Moroccan government. This technical support helped catalyse investment that will see COVID-19 vaccines produced on the African continent in 2022. We are also engaging with the new Partnership for African Vaccine Manufacturing to support development of its roadmap for African vaccine manufacturing.

However, the UKHSA produces regular assessments of the risk presented to the United Kingdom by travellers from other countries and nations. Assessment of vaccination coverage in low income countries forms part of these individual country risk assessments, including the risk/threat to public health in the UK. These risk assessments are used by Ministers to decide on border security measures, such as ‘red listing’.
more like this

answer text
The UK has led in supporting global access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines from the outset of the pandemic. We are working with the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-A) and the Multilateral Leaders Taskforce (the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Health Organization and World Trade Organization) to assess the financing needed to supply and deliver vaccines to low- and middle-income countries. These costs are dependent on a variety of uncertainties, including the potential need for booster doses and in-country delivery costs. The ACT-A investment case will shortly publish the estimated costs required to meet global vaccination targets in 2022 and how these can be met.

The UK is among the largest donors to the COVAX AMC, committing £548 million. Over 378 million vaccines have been delivered globally through COVAX to 144 participants. The UK's G7 Presidency secured agreement from leaders to support vaccinating the world in 2022 and to share and finance an additional 1 billion doses over the next year to accelerate vaccine roll-out. The UK committed to share 100 million doses, with 80% going to COVAX. Over 10 million doses have been delivered, with over 6 million doses shared through COVAX. The UK is committed to work with International Financial Institutions who have a central role in sustainably financing the supply and delivery of vaccines.
