answer text <p>Users of the Dartford Crossing can pay the Dart Charge up to a year in advance and by midnight the day after travel. They can also set up a pay as you go account where their card will be automatically charged when they cross, or a pre-pay account which also offers a discounted rate. The vast majority of journeys at the Dartford Crossing are paid for correctly and on time (94.7% in the period May 2022 to April 2023 inclusive).</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Dartford Crossing receives zero income from tolls. Tolls have not been in operation since 2003 when the debts associated with the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and the tunnels were fully discharged. answer text <p>The revenue accruing from the Dart Charge is published each year in the Dartford-Thurrock river crossing charging scheme accounts (in the table headed income) which can be found here: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/search/all?keywords=%22dartford+thurrock%22+accounts&amp;order=relevance" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/search/all?keywords=%22dartford+thurrock%22+accounts&amp;order=relevance</a>.</p><p> </p><p>Toll charges were levied until 2003 when the debts associated with the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and the tunnels had been fully discharged. A Road User Charge was introduced in 2003 to manage the high demand for use of the Crossing after a study reported that traffic levels would be 17% higher if payment was removed. The charges imposed and collected are used to fund transport improvements in accordance with the Transport Act 2000, though not exclusively Dartford-related.</p><p> </p><p>The published accounts include figures on the maintenance and operation of the crossing in the expenditure table.</p><p> </p><p>The maintenance cost for both the tunnels and Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, for the year ended 31 March 2019, amounted to £11.371 million. answer text <p>The Department for Transport has no plans to review the affordability of the Dart Charge. The current charges for the Dartford-Thurrock Crossing were set in 2014, following an impact assessment, which took account of benefits and disadvantages to business and personal users, prior to a public consultation. The charges exist to manage demand and congestion at the Crossing</p><p> </p><p>The charge levels and concessions available take account of local people’s need to use the Crossing. Residents of the Boroughs of Dartford and Thurrock can pay £10 for 50 crossings, plus 20p for each additional crossing or £20 a year for unlimited use. Disabled users who are exempt from vehicle tax are also exempt from paying the Dart Charge, if they are using the same vehicle. Any Crossing user can set up an account that will allow automatic payment for each trip and a prepaid account also offers users a discount of up to 20 per cent.</p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this
