Therefore, whilst there is no robust estimate of the total cost of cyber crime to the UK economy it is likely to be billions.</p><p>The Economic and Social Costs of Crime report (Home Office, 2018) estimated a cost of £1.1bn from computer misuse incidents against individuals in the financial year 2015/16. These reports were triaged and prioritised using our new categorisation process, working closely with law enforcement where required. As was recently noted in the NCSC’s Annual Review, between 1 September 2017 and 31 August 2018, 557 of these incidents warranted an enhanced level of investigation. A smaller subset necessitated a cross-government coordinated response. The Cyber Aware and Take Five campaigns are designed to help encourage the public and small businesses to protect themselves from cyber crime and fraud, providing advice on specific protective and actionable behaviours to increase resilience.</p><p>Cyber Aware and Take Five in particular have been developed jointly by industry and Government experts including the National Cyber Security Centre and the Joint Fraud Taskforce and have established consensus around a single set of authoritative advice to protect individuals from cyber criminals and fraudsters. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/02/2018 answer text <p>How police record cyber crime on their systems is an operational matter for individual police forces.</p><p>Experimental statistics on offences recorded by the police in England and Wales which were flagged as “online crime” are published quarterly by the Office for National Statistics in the statistical bulletin Crime in England and Wales. The latest statistics, covering year to September 2017 can be found here:</p><p><a href="https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesexperimentaltables" target="_blank">https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesexperimentaltables</a></p><p>Work is ongoing with forces to improve the quality of the data submitted in this collection. There are some large variations in the proportion of offences flagged by each force depending on crime type and there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that the flag is currently underused. Therefore, going forward, with improved identification of online related offences, the proportion of all offences flagged as being online related is likely to increase.</p><p>Furthermore, offences of cybercrime may be recorded by Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre. Cyber crime offences (also known as offences committed under the Computer Misuse Act) are recorded in accordance with Home Office counting rules under the relevant National Fraud Intelligence Bureau code. This is why the National Cyber Security Strategy 2016-2021 is supported by £1.9billion of transformational investment. Through the National Cyber Security Programme (NCSP), this Government continues to invest in law enforcement capabilities at the national, regional and local levels to ensure delivery agencies have the capacity to deal with the increasing volume and sophistication of cyber crime.</p><p> </p><p>The College of Policing Cyber Digital Career Pathway Project will create a Cyber Digital Investigation Profession across law enforcement providing a career pathway and professional certification for professionals at the core of digital investigations – setting the industry standards.</p><p> </p><p>With £4.6m from the Police Transformation Fund (PTF) 2016-17 the NPCC set up the Digital Policing Portfolio (DPP) to help provide a step-change in digital capability, equipping forces with the tools to police effectively in a digital age and protect the public from digital crime. In addition, the Police Transformation Fund awarded £1.5m to the ‘Crystallise’ project; ‘Defining the Digital Intelligence &amp; Investigations Service Model for Local Policing’. This aims to make Digital Intelligence and Investigation part of day-to-day local policing by creating a service model.</p><p>Individual police forces are responsible for ensuring that their officers and staff have the necessary training to do their job.
