Research shows that restricting access to abortion services does not make abortions less common – it only serves to make them less safe, risking women’s and girls’ health and lives through dangerous, backstreet abortions. At least 8% of maternal deaths worldwide are caused by unsafe abortions. Millions more women and girls are left with injuries and disabilities as a result.</p><p> </p><p>The UK’s position is that safe abortion reduces recourse to unsafe abortion and thus saves lives, and that women and adolescent girls must have the right to make their own decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being. NICE, as part of the planning for this guideline explored the views of stakeholders on what would be most useful to focus on through a workshop, meetings and through a scope consultation. The final scope of the termination of pregnancy guideline was based on the input that NICE received from the stakeholders that engaged with NICE.</p><p> </p><p>The scope of the termination of pregnancy guideline clearly sets out that the NICE guideline is for women who have already decided to have a termination of pregnancy or have undergone a life-saving termination of pregnancy.</p><p> </p><p>NICE is looking at the evidence for common harms such as, haemorrhage and infection where there may be evidence of a difference in long-term outcomes. The Department has not commissioned any such studies directly concerned with the long-term effects of abortion. However, a study currently underway, aims to provide the research and practical evidence base to deliver quality improvement in preconception care, to prevent unplanned pregnancies and abortion, and to mitigate the adverse impacts of unplanned pregnancies. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/02/2019 answer text <p>Data on the number of abortions declined as a result of a suspicion of coercion is not collected centrally.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has no current plans to commission a review of reproductive coercion.</p><p> </p><p>The Department takes this issue very seriously. The Department’s required standard operating procedures (RSOPs) for independent sector abortion providers and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists clinical guideline on the Care of Women Requesting Induced Abortion, specify that careful and sensitive enquiry as to the reasons for requesting an abortion should be made, with the opportunity for further discussion, especially where women express any doubts or there may be a suggestion of pressure or coercion.
