star this property answer text
The Government is committed to achieving the Paris Agreement climate goals and is increasingly putting environment and climate at the heart of UK Aid. The majority of UK Official Development Assistance for energy either supports renewable energy, helps governments to improve sector policy and governance, or supports energy research. UK Aid has helped over 17 million people with improved access to clean energy.

We do not provide direct assistance for coal-fired generation.

For other fossil fuels our approach is to support their development where there is a clear developmental need and as part of a transition to low-carbon economies. In assessing new support, we will ensure that assistance does not undermine the ambition in a country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and that an appropriate carbon price is used in the appraisal of the programme.
more like this

star this property answer text
As of 2 September 2019, DFID has spent an estimated £47,000 since the start of financial year 2016/17 on newspaper subscriptions (both physical and online). Broken down by year:

Financial year

Estimated spend

2016/17

£12,000

2017/18

£12,500

2018/19

£17,000

2019/20

£5,500

These figures are estimates because the costs of some newspaper subscriptions are combined with magazine subscriptions and cannot be disaggregated.

Information on the total spent specifically on online subscriptions and the number of each individual newspaper procured is not held centrally and could only be collated at disproportionate cost.
more like this

It does not provide support to Congolese refugees. We continue to monitor the overall humanitarian situation in Burundi, including that of Congolese refugees, given ongoing risks in the country.

The UK also remains committed to reducing poverty and instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – a key driver for migration to neighbouring countries. The UK is funding stabilisation activities in Eastern DRC to address the underlying drivers of conflict, and we remain at the forefront of the humanitarian response in the DRC.
more like this
