We could therefore only provide this figure at disproportionate cost.</p><p> </p><p>Section 17 of the Children Act 1989 makes it the general duty of every local authority</p><p>to safeguard and promote the welfare of children within their area who are in need</p><p>by providing a range and level of services appropriate to those children’s needs. This includes the provision of accommodation where it is necessary to protect a child. Section 20 of the Children Act 1989 imposes a specific duty on local authorities to provide accommodation for any child in need in their area who appears to require it because there is no one with parental responsibility for them, they have been lost or abandoned, or the person caring for them is prevented (temporarily or otherwise) from providing suitable accommodation or care.</p> more like this

Most recently, the British High Commissioner to India raised Mr <strong>Johal</strong>'s case with the Indian Foreign Secretary on 10 May, and with the Indian High Commissioner to the UK on 10 June. The Minister for Asia and the Pacific also raised Mr <strong>Johal</strong>'s case with the Indian Foreign Secretary on 12 March. The Foreign Secretary and the Minister for Asia and the Pacific met with Mr Johal's family and their MP, Martin Docherty-Hughes on 24 April. Our consular staff in India continue to regularly visit Mr <strong>Johal</strong>.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We are committed to ensuring more effective support for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Ministers from the Department for Education (DfE) regularly discuss issues relating to special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including SLCN, with ministers from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and other government departments.</p><p> </p><p>On 20 May 2019, we held the first SEND ministerial roundtable meeting between ministers from the DfE, DHSC and key SEND stakeholders to help inform future SEND policy. We will also be using these meetings to help inform the SEND system leadership board which aims to improve joint working and strategic commissioning for all children and young people with SEND, including those with SLCN.</p><p> </p><p>On 20 June 2019, the government issued a letter responding to the ‘Bercow: Ten Years On’ first anniversary update report, which was co-signed by ministers from the DfE, DHSC and the Ministry of Justice. The letter reaffirmed our commitment to supporting children and young people with SLCN.</p>
