These policies should be informed by evidence on infrastructure need and cost and viability assessments. This asks local authorities to optimise density in the development of towns, and to recognise the character and beauty of the countryside. Plans should focus development on sustainable locations. The Framework also makes clear that, in rural areas, housing should be located where it will enhance or maintain the vitality of rural communities.</p><p>It is for local authorities to use their plans to determine the extent of settlements, and say where essential development should go, and where restraint, such as Green Belt, is needed. One of the purposes of Green Belt is to prevent neighbouring towns merging into one another. Cooking appliances are not controlled under the Building Regulations, however, we expect that many developers will choose not to install new gas connections in developments adopting the Future Homes Standard. There are a range of alternatives, including modern electric and induction hobs, which are cleaner and safer to use than gas, cheaper to install and maintain, and better for the environment.</p><p>The Future Homes Standard is about building homes that are affordable to buy, affordable to run, and help to meet our climate change commitments.
