star this property answer text
The Government is committed to tackling extremism in all its forms.

The 2015 Counter-Extremism Strategy sets out a four year programme of work for defeating extremism at source. Since 2015 the Government has funded additional security measures in 129 places of worship, including places targeted by far-right extremists; excluded and refused entry to the UK to known far-right extremists; created a network of more than 160 civil society partners confronting extremism in their communities; and supported Local Authorities tackling far-right extremism. The newly established independent Commission for Countering Extremism has been given a clear remit to identify and challenge extremism in all its forms.

In December 2016, the neo-Nazi group National Action became the first extreme right-wing group to be proscribed by Government as a terrorist organisation. The Government’s updated and strengthened Counter-Terrorism Strategy (CONTEST) addresses all forms of terrorism and confirms that extreme right-wing terrorism is a growing threat. Since 2017, the police and the security and intelligence agencies have disrupted four extreme right-wing terrorist plots. CONTEST confirms the Security Service will have greater involvement in the assessment and investigation of extreme right-wing terrorism.

The Home Office has therefore provided £150,000 to fund this research, which is being carried out by the University of Bristol, and will help to inform future policy.

For example, some victims may not wish to maintain contact when they leave the National Referral Mechanism.

We are working with the National Crime Agency to improve our ability to identify potential re-trafficking cases. Our reforms to introduce a new digital referral process and to provide access to ‘drop-in’ services for 6 months after confirmed victims have left Government-funded support will also improve our ability to identify re-trafficking for this cohort of victims.

more like this

The possession of any amount of a controlled drug is a criminal offence and the supply of a controlled drug is an even more serious offence. No illegal drug-taking can be assumed to be safe and there is no safe way to take them.

The Government’s approach remains clear: we must prevent illicit drug use in our communities and help those dependent on drugs to recover, while ensuring our drug laws are enforced. In relation to drug testing at festivals, chief constables are responsible for operational decisions in their local area and we are not standing in their way. We are exploring with the National Police Chiefs’ Council whether their advice on this issue needs to be clarified.
more like this

star this property answer text
All asylum interviews are carried out by an impartial interviewing officer.

All interpreters engaged by the Home Office must demonstrate they have the required skills and qualifications. They are also bound by a “Code of Conduct” to ensure minimum standards for interpreting and behaviour. Home Office policy and guidance ensures that in the event of interpreters or interviews falling short of those standards, it would not adversely affect an individual’s asylum claim.

Interviewing Officers are encouraged to provide feedback on the performance of interpreters, using specifically designed monitoring forms. Interviews may also be monitored for training and security purposes. Increased use of technologies, such as interviewing by video conferencing facilities, are being trialled to increase efficiency and transform the asylum process. Currently the majority of interviews are conducted face to face.

We have recently introduced digital interviewing capability across the asylum casework operational as part of the wider Home Office digital transformation programme, which aims for the department to become ‘digital by default’. We are aiming to digitally record all asylum interviews and provide claimants and their legal representative with a digital recording of their interview in addition to a written transcript. Claimants who do not want their interview to be audio recorded and provide reasonable explanation for this will be exempt from the recording requirement.
