star this property answer text <p>We do not consider that the letter issued to individuals in immigration detention who have refused foods or fluids contravenes human rights obligations or immigration law. The letter in question is part of guidance which was cleared by Home Office lawyers and published in October 2017.</p><p>The approach taken in the letter accurately reflects the fact that, in the interests of health and wellbeing, the most appropriate way in which to respond to some cases of refusal to take food or fluids is to prioritise the consideration of the individual’s case including, if appropriate, their removal from detention and the UK, whilst ensuring that the case is processed fairly.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We continue to make representations to the Israeli authorities about the situation for Palestinian children in Israeli military detention. The Minister for the Middle East most recently raised this matter with the Israeli Ambassador to the UK on 27 February. We have also offered to arrange expert-to-expert discussions focussed on addressing the sensitive issue of children in detention with the Israeli Government. This offer remains in place and we hope Israel will take us up on it.</p> more like this

While it would be inappropriate to comment on those negotiations, the UK considers freedom of religion and belief to be one of the Commonwealth's core values.</p><p>Encouraging member states to uphold the values and principles enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter – which include freedom of religion as well as democracy, freedom of expression, the rule of law and opposition to all forms of discrimination – will be an important part of April's summit.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We are unable to estimate accurately the air quality impacts resulting from Volkwagen’s actions as it is not possible to quantify the additional emissions of the affected vehicles under all conditions of operation.</p><p> </p><p>However the Department has made a comparison of the old software to the new ‘fix’ software under test track conditions. Results from tests of four Skoda vehicles (Roomster, Rapid, Superb and Octavia) indicate 25-40% lower NOx emissions with the new ‘fix’ software.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We are committed to upholding the principles of the Commonwealth Charter, including the inalienable right of individuals to participate in free and fair elections. Our High Commissions regularly engage with a range of political actors and institutions across the Commonwealth in support of those principles.</p><p>We also support the work of the Commonwealth Secretariat in this field: both its co-ordination of Commonwealth Election Observer Groups and the technical assistance it provides to improve electoral systems, practice and legislation in Commonwealth member states. In addition, the UK works closely with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to promote stronger parliamentary democracy in the Commonwealth.</p><p>The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London in April will discuss the protection and promotion of democracy. The UK will also join the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, which acts as the custodian of the values and principles set out in the Commonwealth Charter</p>
