star this property answer text While we have not made a recent assessment of this issue, freedom of religion and belief remains a human rights priority for this Government. It is a fundamental freedom which underpins many other human rights. Our Consulate General in Jerusalem regularly meets a variety of religious leaders in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and has stressed to the Palestinian Authority the importance of protecting freedom of religion and belief. more like this

star this property answer text
The UK continues to take the lead in lobbying across the international community, urging all parties to the conflict to take action to ensure rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access. This call was repeated by the UN Security Council Presidential Statement proposed and coordinated by the UK in June 2017.

The British Government has been very closely engaged on the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The Foreign Secretary and I have spoken to the Saudi Foreign Minister about the situation several times in recent months. The Foreign Secretary also discussed this with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on several occasions – most recently on 19 December. The Prime Minister, International Development Secretary and Chancellor all raised the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis during recent visits to Saudi Arabia. We welcome the announcement on 20 December 2017, by the Saudi-led Coalition, that Hodeidah port will be kept open for humanitarian and food supplies, and that commercial shipping including fuel and food will be permitted to enter.

star this property answer text
The new Single Departmental Plan of the Department for International Development (DFID) puts the Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2) at the centre of our work to eradicate extreme poverty, deliver inclusive economic development, including sustainable agricultural programmes and investments, and build resilience. Spend through our bilateral and multilateral agriculture programmes to reduce hunger and under-nutrition has increased, from £243million (2012) to £484 million (2015) and roughly £600 million in 2016. We are also working to shape the multilateral agenda. The Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) harnesses both public and private investments for SDG2 and implements through a range of multilateral institutions. DFID is a global leader in addressing acute hunger through humanitarian and famine relief. DFID has also committed to improve the nutrition of 50 million people overseas by 2020 and published a Position Paper setting out our plans. Total spend on nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programmes has increased, from £304 million (2012) to £667 million (2015).

We are also supporting robust monitoring of progress against the agreed indicators for SDG2 to be achieved by 2030.

Needs are most acute in the north-east and include food, water, shelter, medical supplies and basic sanitation. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and explosive remnants of war continue to pose a threat.

Through its partners, DFID has stepped up its support to internally displaced people and host communities where access allows. This includes providing food, water and winter kit supplies, sanitation support, resupplying damaged health facilities, and education on the risks of mines. The UK continues to call on all parties to protect civilians, and enable unhindered access to all affected areas across Syria.
more like this
