The Government recognises the importance of good local bus and rail infrastructure
to businesses. For this reason, I am working with the Secretary of State for Transport
to ensure that upgrading infrastructure is one of the key pillars of the Government’s
emerging Industrial Strategy.

In addition to our work on the emerging Industrial
Strategy, the Government continues both to invest in transport infrastructure and
to provide new powers to local areas, to ensure local transport services meets the
needs of businesses and the wider community. As such we are investing £46bn to operate
and enhance the railway between 2014-19 and a further £900m, through the Local Growth
Fund, towards schemes that improve rail and bus infrastructure. We have also given
local communities new ways to improve local transport for the benefit of businesses.
For example, the Bus Services Act gives new powers to local authorities and bus operators
to work with local businesses to provide the services they need.
