For the calendar year ending 31 December 2013, the latest period for which figures are available, 93% of responses to MPs and Peers were answered within our target of 15 working days. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/09/2014 answer text <p>Every effort is made to ensure that departmental correspondence is dealt with in an efficient and cost-effective manner.</p><p>Letters are sent on stationery printed in-house. If sending a ministerial reply to hon. Members at the House of Commons or House of Lords then no postage is incurred as mail is delivered twice a day from the Department, 1 Victoria Street on our van service.</p><p> </p><p>During recess, letters are sent via first class mail – the cost of stationery and postage during the most recent summer recess period is estimated at around £200. Members are hand delivered to Parliament so there is no delivery cost to the department. The stationery used is recycled paper supplied to the Cabinet Office by Banner Business Services on a closed loop arrangement, whereby our paper waste is fully recycled and returned to us to use as copy paper. Members, however we can estimate a cost based on use of paper, envelopes, postage and ink cartridges on annual enquiries ranging between 10,000 – 12,000, of which 95% are postal replies. The cost ranges between £6,500 and £7,500 depending on reply volume per annum.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Most correspondence from hon. Members continues to be received as letters and is replied to in the same format. The report published by the Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General (Official Report, 13 May 2014, 17WS) shows that Department for Education Ministers received 16,898 letters from parliamentarians in the 2013 calendar year. We do not keep records of the form in which replies to such letters are sent. As explained by the former Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Education and Childcare in the reply given to the hon. Member on 7 July, Official Report Column 151W, most correspondence from hon. Members continues to be received as letters and is replied to in the same format.
