answer text
The UK recognises the value of learning from others by keeping abreast of developments in Europe and internationally. However, we believe that this can be achieved through less bureaucratic routes than a European Alliance for Apprenticeships. In England, we do not propose to participate but the devolved administrations are free to do so if they believe that the Alliance is the appropriate framework for sharing best practice.

We are already taking strong action to improve opportunities for young people by funding record numbers of apprenticeships, new traineeships and improved maths and English training. These actions, along with the record number of jobs, have contributed to the 32.8% fall in youth unemployment over the past year.
more like this

answer text

My Department's Integration Team has not had any contact with the European Parliament Working Group on Freedom of Religion or Belief, although we recognise the important role of the Group in raising awareness about the issue. My noble Friend, (the rt. hon. Baroness Warsi), the Senior Minister for Faith and Communities, who is also a Minister at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has made Freedom of Religion or Belief a priority and the government works in multilateral fora to ensure that it is afforded the international legal protection that it deserves. My noble Friend has also convened meetings of international leaders to generate practical steps to promote freedom of religion or belief and to fight religious intolerance within our societies. In the UK she chairs a Sub Group on Freedom of Religion or Belief, made up of human rights advocates, academics and civil society leaders, ensuring that government takes a well informed and inclusive approach to promoting and protecting this human right.

answer text
UK aid to Nigeria is delivered through civil society organisations, technical assistance and UN agencies. DFID does not finance the Government of Nigeria directly. As most UKAID programmes are national in scope, it is not possible to provide regional breakdowns, however since 2011 at least 60% of our funds are focussed on Northern Nigeria. The figures for UK Aid to Nigeria for the last 5 years are:

2009/10

£117.4m

2010/11

£131.1m

2011/12

£171.6m

2012/13

£196.5m

2013/14

£ 265.9m

In 2011, DFID launched a £39m Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme, which supports Federal and State Governments and civil society organisations to tackle the causes of violent conflict and to improve coordination within and between state agencies and local populations. The programme operates a grants fund for civil society organisations in priority states in the North, Middle Belt and the Delta.

answer text

The Government is disappointed that the European Parliament voted to suspend Gibraltar from the Single European Skies dossier. This position is inconsistent with the EU treaties – which are clear that Gibraltar is part of the EU – and inconsistent with the approach taken earlier this year on Air Passenger Rights, where the European Parliament correctly amended the legislation so it applied to Gibraltar.

The UK cannot accept a return to the pre-2006 practice of suspending Gibraltar Airport from EU aviation measures. Gibraltarians, and other EU citizens who pass through Gibraltar airport, should benefit fully from the rights accorded elsewhere in the EU.

The proposed measure needs to be agreed by both the Council and the European Parliament. The Council is currently discussing text proposed by the European Commission on the amended Single European Sky legislation (known as SES II+), which does not exclude Gibraltar. The UK will continue to oppose any proposals to exclude Gibraltar from the scope of this legislation.
