answer text <p>Road safety is a devolved matter in Northern Ireland, so I can reply only for Great Britain.</p><p> </p><p>The Government takes road safety seriously and driving without insurance is unacceptable behaviour. We always keep the law under review but currently there are no plans to increase the penalty for driving without insurance.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The law does not allow a driver to hold both a GB and an EU driving licence at the same time. Any driver holding an EU driving licence must surrender it before a GB licence can be issued. This is an important provision which helps prevent the circumvention of the system of driving licence endorsements and disqualification for road traffic offences. answer text <p>The Government takes the impact of traffic noise on health, wellbeing and the natural environment seriously. Vehicles are required to meet strict noise limits before being placed on the market and police have powers to act if they suspect a vehicle is making excessive amounts of noise.</p><p> </p><p>On 2 August, the Department published the results of research into enforcement against excessive noise pollution from vehicles using “acoustic cameras”. This research has shown that the technology has the potential to be used for enforcement, but that there are still difficulties in accurately measuring noise from individual vehicles in busier traffic conditions. There is an active research programme to address these challenges and, in the longer term, create new tools for enforcement.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Effective disability awareness training can help ensure that taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers have the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide passengers with appropriate assistance, so that they can travel independently and with confidence.</p><p>The Department wants every local licensing authority to require taxi and PHV drivers to complete this training and will make this clear in updated best practice guidance, due to be published for consultation later in the year.</p><p>The Government also remains committed to introducing mandatory disability awareness training for taxi and PHV drivers through new National Minimum Standards for licensing authorities when Parliamentary time allows.</p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

A decision on whether to retrofit across the remainder of ALR smart motorways will be considered as part of the formulation of the third Road Investment Strategy.</p><p>As of December 2021, 50.7 miles of operational All Lane Running motorways had emergency area average spacing between at least 0.75 miles and 1 mile apart. Work will start immediately on retrofitting the remaining operational network, so that it meets the latest standard of emergency area spacing being 0.75 mile where feasible, up to a maximum of 1 mile.</p><p> </p> more like this
