The Department for Transport works closely with rolling stock owners and train operators to understand when new trains are likely to be required and seeks to ensure a regular flow of work for train manufacturers. Trains are major assets with a lifetime of 35-40 years so there will naturally be peaks and troughs in procurement cycles.</p><p> </p><p>Since 2012, train operators have invested in around 8,000 new vehicles for the mainline railway in Great Britain. Despite the impacts of the Covid pandemic, there is now a strong domestic UK market for rolling stock procurement. Over 2,000 new vehicles are expected to be procured over the next few years, providing £3.6 billion of opportunities for train manufacturers. Rolling stock owners also continue to invest heavily in their fleets, with several major upgrades currently underway.</p><p> </p><p>In January 2024, I wrote to train manufacturers to outline the pipeline of current and expected orders for new trains. Through our engagement process we stress to the rail industry that it should take every opportunity to make use of local components wherever practical, and support businesses across the country. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/06/2019 answer text <p>Government and industry are promoting improved procurement practices through the Sustainable Supply Chain pillar of the Rail Sector Deal.</p><p> </p><p>Improved practices may include more effective use of early contractor engagement, simplified tendering processes, and procurement balanced scorecards examining whole-life costs and benefits. Such practices may be used more widely by public and also private sector organisations, therefore enabling tier one suppliers and others to support their own supply chains.</p><p> </p><p>The Railway Industry Association (RIA) is currently taking forward work on this element of the sector deal on behalf of the rail industry. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/04/2019 answer text <p>The proposal for a facility in Bescot is being developed by Network Rail to produce the sleepers necessary for them to maintain, renew, and enhance our rail network.</p><p> </p><p>Network Rail has received a Freedom of Information request to publish the independent report on possible locations for a new sleeper factory.
