Following the launch of a statutory inquiry by the Charity Commission, Save the Children UK withdrew from bidding for new UK Government funding until they can meet the high standards we expect of all our partners. Existing programmes with Save the Children will continue, governed by our risk management processes. Aid organisations regularly reconsider operations due to insecurity. Conflict has also deepened the country’s crisis, displacing millions and bringing the economy to its knees amongst widespread hunger.</p><p>Amidst these challenges, UKAid is saving hundreds of thousands of lives and protecting future generations. The UK monitors conflict dynamics on a monthly basis to ensure our aid is conflict sensitive and to minimise harm. This is completely unacceptable.</p><p>Alongside our international partners, the UK is continuing to engage with South Sudan’s leaders at the highest level to make clear that physical and bureaucratic obstacles to the delivery of lifesaving aid must cease immediately.</p><p>Despite these obstructions, UKAid continues to save lives. The UK is funding a number of interventions including being the second largest contributor to the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies which has released $2 million to support response activities for the next three months. In addition, the UK supported the development of vaccines of which 4,000 are now in the DRC with more scheduled to arrive imminently. The Government remains committed to supporting Nigeria to respond to humanitarian needs, and address the root causes of the conflict in the north-east of the country. Education is a crucial part of working towards a brighter future for the region.</p><p> </p><p>The UK and Nigeria have both endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration, which deters the military from use of schools and prevents schools becoming targets in conflict-affected areas. DFID is supporting the Government of Nigeria to implement the Declaration, including in the north-east.</p><p> </p><p>DFID supported the Safe School Initiative.
