answer text
The most recent data for families with children in temporary accommodation was published in May 2019 and can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/live-tables-on-homelessness

Time spent in temporary accommodation can mean people are getting help and it ensures no family is without a roof over their head.

The Homelessness (Suitability of Accommodation) (England) Order 2012 helps prevent the use of temporary accommodation long distances from the family’s previous home and community. Homeless households also have legal rights to request a review of a decision to place them in unsuitable accommodation.

In 2011, the law was changed to allow councils to place homeless families in decent and affordable private rented homes as well as social rented homes. This now means homeless households should not have to wait as long for settled accommodation.

The Government has targeted funding streams focused on reducing the number of households in Temporary Accommodation. For example we have recently launched the Private Rented Sector (PRS) Access Fund which will fund schemes that will support families who are or at risk of homelessness, supporting them to sustain and access PRS accommodation.

answer text
The Government Publishes the number of children who are living in temporary accommodation, at local authority, London and national level. You are able to find these statistics at the following link: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/live-tables-on-homelessness.

The Government is committed to reducing homelessness and rough sleeping. No one should ever have to sleep rough. That is why last summer we published the cross-government Rough Sleeping Strategy. This sets out an ambitious £100 million package to help people who sleep rough now, but also puts in place the structures that will end rough sleeping once and for all. The Government has now committed over £1.2 billion to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over the spending review period.
more like this

answer text
Temporary accommodation provides an important safety net and means that no one has to be without a roof over their heads.

We brought the Homelessness Reduction Act into force in April 2018. This is the biggest and most ambitious change to homelessness legislation in decades, focusing on preventing homelessness in the first place, and ensuring more people are getting the help they need.

We also replaced DWP’s Temporary Accommodation Management Fee with a Flexible Homelessness Support Grant which local authorities can use more strategically to prevent homelessness and help households find a settled home. This amounts to £615 million over three years from 2017/18.

Our new Homelessness Advice and Support Team, drawn from local authorities and the homelessness sector, is providing support to authorities to deliver the Homelessness Reduction Act and effective Homelessness Services. The number of families in B&B accommodation is down by 28 per cent compared to the same time last year. The number of households with children in B&B accommodation for longer than 6 weeks is down by 38 per cent on the same time last year.

There are councils who are successfully reducing the number and length of time families are spending in B&B accommodation. For example, the London Borough of Barnet has developed a targeted programme of support to reduce the use of temporary accommodation. From December 2016 to March 2018 it reduced the number of children living in Temporary Accommodation by 11 per cent. We expect areas in similar situations to follow their example.

answer text
We are implementing the Homelessness Reduction Act, which commences in April 2018. The Act significantly reforms England’s homelessness legislation, ensuring that more people get the help they need earlier to prevent them from becoming homeless in the first place.

The law is clear that households with dependent children should only be accommodated in B&B in an emergency and then for no longer than 6 weeks.

Our new Homelessness Advice and Support Team, drawn from local authorities and the homelessness sector, are providing targeted challenge and support to help Councils improve their practice and performance – including the use of B&B accommodation for families.

The Government remains committed to combating homelessness and rough sleeping. To achieve this, we have set up a Rough Sleeping and Homelessness Reduction Taskforce that will focus on prevention and affordable housing. We have allocated over £1 billion over the course of the spending review to tackle and reduce homelessness. This includes £315 million Homelessness Prevention funding and a Flexible Homelessness Support Grant which local authorities can use more strategically to prevent homelessness from happening in the first place. This amounts to £402 million over the two years from 2017/18, with further funding to be announced for 2019/20.
