As part of the Government’s continued commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant,
veterans are able to access National Health Service-provided mainstream and bespoke
evidence-based mental health services.

The NHS in England has developed two
bespoke veterans’ services; the Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service, which
supports serving personnel who need additional mental health support as they are leaving
the Armed Forces and veterans who have mental health issues; and the Complex Treatment
Service, that has been designed to support veterans with complex mental health issues,
not limited to post-traumatic stress disorder, that have not improved with previous
treatment.

In December last year, NHS England announced an extra £10 million
to expand these services and seek ways to close the gaps in current mental health
provision to meet the needs of those individuals that are nearing crisis. This expansion
will increase capacity and help to ensure that specialist health support for veterans
is available across a wider geographical area, helping many more vulnerable ex-Service
Personnel, families and those in the criminal justice system.
