Long-term exposure to air pollution can cause chronic conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory diseases and cancer, leading to reduced life expectancy.</p><p>Air pollution has a particular impact on children as they grow. There is evidence that the process of normal lung function growth in children is suppressed by long-term exposure to air pollution.</p><p>Research projects studying the effects of air pollution on children’s health include the EXHALE Programme; a London study on air pollution and children’s lung health. The Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants has started work to consider the evidence for the effects of air pollution on adverse birth outcomes. HEE intended to publish a second phase, longer-term strategy that looked at the cancer workforce needs beyond 2021. This work was started and stakeholders from within the National Health Service and the charitable sector contributed to the early discussions. This work has since been superseded by publication of the NHS Long Term Plan in January 2019.</p><p>My Rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has subsequently commissioned Baroness Dido Harding, working closely with Sir David Behan, to lead a number of programmes to engage with key NHS interests to develop a detailed workforce implementation plan. All marketing materials promote the ‘eligibility criteria tool’ which is found on the Give Blood website at the following link:</p><p> </p><p><a href="https://www.blood.co.uk/" target="_blank">https://www.blood.co.uk/</a></p><p> </p><p>The ‘eligibility criteria tool’ lists the deferral times for a range of scenarios such as travel, medical conditions, tattoos and includes information for men who have sex with men and wish to donate blood. NHS Blood and Transplant is committed to exploring whether a more individualised approach to risk assessment could be taken to donor selection and expects to report on its findings regarding new evidence and new technologies for assessing risk by 2020. The programme is at an early stage with stakeholders having been consulted on initial draft proposed guidelines only in autumn 2018. No decisions have been taken at this stage of development on the guidelines and whether or how these will apply to imported products. PHE is considering the points raised through the consultation and is aiming to publish the guidelines in mid-2019.</p><p>In March 2017 PHE published guidance to assist local authorities in supporting and working with small businesses on voluntary reduction initiatives including calories.
