answer text <p>The Forestry Commission did not introduce a system for centrally recording the area of land leased to third parties until 2018 so the figures for earlier years could only be provided at disproportionate cost.</p><p> </p><p>In 2018, 28,065 hectares of land were leased by the Forestry Commission; approximately 11% of the Public Forest Estate.</p><p> </p><p>Forestry Commission records of land use would suggest that the nature of the estate has remained fairly constant and as such the proportion leased is unlikely to have change significantly in the last 10 years.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Natural flood management (NFM) measures are often integrated alongside more traditional approaches in flood and coastal risk management schemes. This includes within the Government’s £2.6 billion six year capital flood and coastal erosion risk management investment programme.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The six year programme is focused on reducing flood risk to at least 300,000 homes, regardless of the type of flood risk management intervention, and the Environment Agency therefore does not hold a separate figure for annual natural flood management spend.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In November 2016, the Government announced £15 million to test natural flood management measures on catchment scale projects that:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><ul><li><p>reduce flood, or coastal erosion risk, to homes;</p></li><li><p>improve habitats and increase biodiversity;</p></li><li><p>contribute to research and development of NFM techniques and interventions; and</p></li><li><p>support and promote partnership working with and between communities.</p></li></ul><p> </p><p>The £15 million will be spent over the remainder of the six-year programme ending in March 2021, with £4.7 million of this Flood Defence Grant-in-Aid (GiA) funding forecast to be spent in the financial year 2019-20 on NFM.</p><p> </p>

answer text <p>Defra is not aware of any research on the use of bacteriophages (viruses of bacteria) as vaccines for bovine TB. The current leading vaccine candidate is BCG which is an attenuated strain of the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis and not a bacteriophage.</p><p> </p><p>However, there is a company developing a Phage test to detect TB. I have met with the developers of this test to discuss their work and officials are engaging with them on the regulatory process they need to go through.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Research on the effect of vaccination in reducing the susceptibility to, and progression of, bovine TB in both cattle and badgers is ongoing at APHA. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), in conjunction with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), launched the TB advantage trait in January 2016 which identifies bulls from dairy breeds which appear to have a reduced susceptibility to TB. Research on a similar approach in beef breeds is underway by the same groups.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We have started exploratory work on the use of tissue sampling to test badgers in some cull areas to identify trends in disease prevalence. In addition there has been a long standing surveillance programme run by APHA which monitors the prevalence of the disease in one highly infected population in Gloucestershire. Post-mortem testing of found-dead wildlife carcasses is also deployed in the Low Risk Area in a targeted way where a cluster of TB cases in cattle is suspected to be linked to TB in wildlife.</p><p> </p> more like this
