answer text <p>UK Government Ministers meet regularly to discuss the Northern Ireland Protocol, including the impact to Northern Ireland’s agriculture sector. There are serious issues with how the Northern Ireland Protocol is currently operating. We are determined to resolve these issues, preferably through talks and negotiations or, if need be, via legislation. Defra officials also meet frequently with organisations from the whole Northern Ireland agri-food supply chain, including Northern Ireland farmers.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Decisions on the construction of Border Control Posts are a matter for the Northern Ireland Executive.</p><p> </p><p>Defra officials continue to work closely with the Northern Ireland Executive to comply with international obligations and give effect to the Protocol in a pragmatic and proportionate way, minimising impacts on the everyday lives of people in Northern Ireland, in line with its fundamental purpose.</p><p> </p><p>The agri-food processes required under the Protocol continue to be discharged using the interim facilities that have been in place since 1 January.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government works closely with the Northern Ireland Executive on devolved agri-food matters and is committed to ensuring that we maximise the opportunities for Northern Ireland having left the EU. It remains committed to a New Deal for Northern Ireland, which includes appropriate commitments to help boost economic growth and Northern Ireland’s competitiveness.</p><p> </p><p>The Government monitors food prices on a monthly basis through the Consumer Prices Index including Housing Costs (CPIH). The Government does not have direct control over food prices, but it constantly monitors and investigates factors and changes that can potentially have an impact on food prices. The Government works closely with the Northern Ireland Executive on devolved agri-food matters.</p><p> </p><p>We want a relationship with the EU which is based on friendly cooperation between sovereign equals and centred on free trade. We will continue to work closely with industry to promote transparency for consumers, and internationally to promote open and sustainable global markets.</p>

answer text <p>Defra discussed with officials at the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) regarding the plans for the Pick for Britain website and their thoughts on a future public facing campaign, to attract more seasonal workers from the UK. The feedback received was that DAERA was working closely with industry representatives in Northern Ireland and would use the existing Department for Communities website – JobCentre Online (JCOL) to advertise local opportunities. The website also provided a link to the Pick for Britain initiative.</p><p> </p><p>We continue to work with Devolved Administrations and hold regular meetings in order to understand the labour needs and specific issues they may be facing.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Secretary of State has had recent discussions with the Northern Ireland Executive both bilaterally and via the Inter-Ministerial Group for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs which brings together ministers from all parts of the UK to discuss matters of shared interest, including funding. Defra also regularly holds discussions with stakeholders from across the agricultural industry, including representatives from Northern Ireland.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has pledged to guarantee the current annual budget in every year of this Parliament. HM Treasury is ultimately responsible for financial matters across UK Government and lead on discussions on all funding matters with finance ministers in the devolved administrations. Defra will of course continue to work closely with HM Treasury and the devolved administrations on these funding arrangements and to agree funding after 2020.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Following the Bew Review, the Government has confirmed that it will not simply apply the Barnett formula to changes in Defra funding beyond this Parliament and has committed to developing an approach on future (i.e. after 2022) funding allocations, recognising that agriculture policy is and will remain devolved. Longer term discussions between the Government and the devolved administrations will be about ensuring allocations are fair and that no farmers in any part of the UK gain an unfair competitive advantage.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Implementing the outcome of the referendum to leave the EU raises significant issues for farmers and agrifood businesses. Whilst the Government’s preference is to leave with an agreement, we have been working hard taking steps to ensure people and businesses are prepared in the event that this is not possible. This includes: publishing numerous pieces of communications since August 2018, including technical notices explaining to businesses and citizens across the UK what they need to do to prepare; and contacting thousands of businesses who trade with the EU, telling them to start getting ready for no-deal customs procedures.</p><p> </p> more like this
