Supporting local authorities to create school places where they are needed most is one of the Department for Education’s main priorities. That is why we have committed £5 billion in capital funding between 2011 and 2015 to help local authorities to create new school places. In addition we have announced an additional £2.35 billion in capital funding to help create new school places that will be needed by September 2017.</p><p> </p><p>This support has already enabled local authorities to create 260,000 additional pupil places between May 2010 and May 2013, including 212,000 primary places, with more in the pipeline for September 2015. Special Guardianship was introduced as a new permanence option for children that offered greater security than foster care, but without the absolute legal severance from their birth family. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/12/2014 answer text <p>It is essential that we have a generation of pupils who have the knowledge and skills they need to become active creators of digital technology, not just passive consumers. This is why the Government introduced the new computing curriculum, which has been taught in schools since September 2014. It provides a core of computer science knowledge as well as ensuring that children understand how computer networks such as the internet operate.</p><p>From key stage 1, children must also be taught how to use technology safely and respectfully, how to keep personal information private, and where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies. Pupils in secondary schools will be taught a range of ways to use technology safely, respectfully, responsibly and securely, including protecting their online identity and privacy. They will learn how to recognise inappropriate content, contact and conduct and know how to report concerns. In recognition of this, the Government is funding a number of initiatives to help schools tackle bullying. The Department for Education is currently providing £4million to anti-bullying organisations to help tackle bullying in schools and, in conjunction with the Government Equalities Office, we recently announced a new £2million fund to support projects which specifically tackle homophobic bullying. We have also produced case studies and advice to help schools understand how best to identify and prevent bullying, and support children who are being bullied.</p><p> </p><p>Teachers play a critical role in tackling bullying, and ensuring the safety of their pupils. The Teachers’ Standards, which must be met by all those awarded qualified teacher status (QTS), and which inform teachers’ annual appraisals, require teachers to “establish a safe and stimulating environment for students, rooted in mutual respect”. Teachers must also “manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment”. It is a three-year campaign to ensure the UK has the maths and science skills it needs to succeed in a competitive global economy.</p><p>A 2014 CBI/Pearson report found that STEM skills are in widespread demand and nearly two in five firms that need employees with STEM skills and knowledge currently have difficulties recruiting staff.</p><p>It is essential that students leave school as fully-rounded individuals, with experience of a broad and balanced curriculum to prepare them for life in modern Britain.
