answer text
The Government is taking the impact from the tragic Grenfell Tower fire very seriously. Building owners across the public sector estate, including schools, have been contacted to ensure any risks are managed and dealt with appropriately and promptly.

All schools must have a mandatory Fire Risk Assessment and all new schools undergo an additional check while being designed. Where sprinklers are necessary to keep staff and students safe, or where they are required under a local authority planning policy, they are fitted. There is not and has never been a national requirement for sprinklers to be fitted in all new or existing schools.

All schools have to follow strict fire safety regulations designed to ensure they are as safe as possible and well prepared in the event of a fire. They must have robust plans to follow, conduct regular fire drills, and typically have multiple exit routes.

The Government has announced an independent review of building regulations and fire safety to be led by Dame Judith Hackitt. Alongside the rest of Government, the Department will take forward any findings from the public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire and ensure any recommendations for schools are implemented.

answer text
Teaching schools have a responsibility through their delivery of Continuing Professional and Leadership Development to develop future head teachers to help meet the most pressing national needs in primary, small rural, special, challenging urban/coastal and faith schools. This includes supporting and training teachers to meet the needs of children and young people with special educational needs and disability (SEND), including dyslexia. The Department does not prescribe approaches to be used by teaching schools but we know from monitoring data, that many Teaching School Alliances run specific dyslexia courses.

In addition, through their role in designating and brokering Specialist Leaders of Education (SLE), Teaching School Alliances are able to offer schools access to a range of SEN expertise. A total of 939 SLEs are designated with a SEN specialism.

We have also enabled teachers to develop their practice in supporting children with SEN and disabilities through the National Scholarship Fund, which allowed teachers to apply for funding to undertake postgraduate level qualifications in specific impairments.

answer text
Access to fee and maintenance loans from the Student Loan Company (SLC) is currently restricted for students wishing to study qualifications that are at an equivalent or lower level to those which they already hold. These are known as Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQ). There are exemptions to these restrictions, including from 2017/18 for all part-time STEM degree courses (which had been eligible for fee support only).

Full-time STEM student numbers increased between 2003 and 2015, in some cases dramatically (notably in Biological Sciences by 87%, Maths by 78% and Physical Sciences by 77%). Across most STEM subjects, levels of sustained employment have also grown either in line with the average or above the average, and average earnings have increased by well above the 11% graduate average. Evidence suggests the last round of Government capital funding for STEM higher education has led to increases in provision.

We will be carefully monitoring the impact of lifting the ELQ exemption for part-time STEM courses in the context of our assessments of higher education STEM and demand overall.
