Similarly, Government proposals to gift controlled military equipment and dual-use equipment are also assessed against the Consolidated Criteria, with the same degree of rigour.

The Consolidated Criteria provide a thorough risk assessment framework, which requires us to think hard about the impact of providing equipment. Under Criterion 7, we would not grant an export licence, or gift equipment, if there was an unacceptable risk that the items would be diverted within the destination country or re-exported under undesirable conditions.
more like this

Friend the Secretary of State for Defence visited the Falklands Islands in February 2016, and met with members of the Falkland Islands Government to discuss a range of issues. The joint Ministry of Defence and Foreign and Commonwealth Office funded Falkland Islands demining programme is making significant progress towards meeting the UK's obligations under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

The current demining phase began in October 2016, tackling the most remote, environmentally-sensitive and complex minefields on the Islands, has already recovered over 3,000 anti-personnel mines and over 150 anti-tank mines, releasing over 3.5 million square metres back to the Islanders. The UK continues to keep the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention informed of its progress.
more like this

As part of that, we have a permanent expert team based in Kabul to investigate claims from local staff who believe their safety is threatened as a result of their work with the UK. answer text
The new contract with Neopost will mean Britain's Armed Forces will continue to receive hard copy, secure mail, including photos from their loved ones for free, with no break in service as the new imail INtouch system replaces the e-bluey on 1 April 2017. This was announced on 27 March 2017.

The e-bluey was a hybrid mail service which enabled service personnel stationed or deployed overseas to receive letters and photographs in hard copy format, but which were sent via email. e-bluey usage has declined by 98% since 2007.

The iMail Intouch system is more modern and better value for money, allowing users to send up to eight pages including high definition photographs and official documents. Savings will be reinvested in welfare provision for the benefit of Service personnel, including the improvement of internet connections in theatre, ensuring that we continue to maintain world-class communications services for our deployed personnel.

Letter and parcel services for personnel and their families will continue as before, with hand-written letters sent free of charge via a Forces Free Air Letter.

We estimate however that the Ministry of Defence has spent over £100 million on inquiries' legal costs and compensation relating to the Iraq conflict, a large proportion of which is attributable to allegations brought by the now discredited Public Interest Lawyers.
more like this
