star this property answer text <p /> <p>Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) provides support to people with a health condition or disability. Entitlement to ESA is based on an individual’s functional ability rather than the condition itself. People claiming ESA will undergo the Work Capability Assessment (WCA). The WCA is based on the premise that eligibility should not be based on a person’s condition, but rather on the way that condition limits their functional capability.</p><p> </p><p>We have strengthened our processes for assessing people with mental health conditions by:</p><p> </p><p>· Introducing Mental Function Champions who spread best practice amongst healthcare professionals in mental health, learning difficulties and cognitive impairment.</p><p>· Redesigning the ESA50 claimant questionnaire to make it clear that evidence from Support Workers, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Carers etc. is valuable particularly in mental health cases.</p><p>· Improving the training in mental health for decision makers and assessors.</p><p>· Accepting Dr Litchfield’s recommendations from the fifth Independent Review of the WCA relating to mental health.</p>
