answer text <p>As part of the government’s ambitious Inclusive Britain action plan, we published comprehensive guidance in April 2023 for employers on how they can measure, report on and address any unfair ethnicity pay gaps within their workforce. We have engaged with employers and representative bodies in both developing and promoting the new guidance.</p><p>We have also worked with employers to deliver other relevant actions in Inclusive Britain including:</p><ul><li>Updated guidance for employers on positive action in the workplace, published last April, on how to widen opportunities in a way that is consistent with equalities legislation.</li><li>The report by the independent Inclusion at Work Panel, published on 20 March, on how to achieve fairness and inclusion in the workplace.</li><li>Introducing a voluntary in-work progression offer for low paid Universal Credit claimants, a disproportionate number of whom are from an ethnic minority background.</li><li>Measures to increase the number of young ethnic minorities in apprenticeships.</li></ul><p> </p>

The Disability Action Plan consultation document set out the Government's work over the last 12 months as well as planned work in 2023/24. answer text <p>The Equality Act 2010 covers both education and employment settings.</p><p>In formulating its school uniform policy, a school must consider its obligations not to discriminate unlawfully under equality law. The Department for Education provides guidance to help schools understand how the Equality Act affects them and how to fulfil their duties under the Act. The guidance makes clear to schools that decisions related to appearance, including on hair, must be made in accordance with their responsibilities under the Equality Act.</p><p>In the workplace, any absolute ban on someone’s ability to manifest their religious beliefs through a chosen hairstyle could constitute direct discrimination because of religion and therefore would be likely to be unlawful, while a ban on hairstyles associated with a particular ethnicity could constitute indirect discrimination because of race which would require the employer imposing the ban to justify why it was necessary, for instance because of health and safety reasons.</p>

answer text <p>Wraparound childcare is a Department for Education policy, therefore the Minister for Women and Equalities would not be best-placed to lead discussions on this issue with the Chancellor. The Equality Hub provides evidence and expertise to support cross-government work on economic and social recovery, working closely with the COVID-19 Taskforce and the relevant delivery departments. This includes working with the Department for Education to highlight the pressures faced by those balancing work with childcare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, as we know that the majority of these pressures fall on women.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>Guided by medical and scientific expertise, the Government has implemented significant measures to reduce the spread of the virus in all communities, especially for people who may be at higher risk. This includes targeted testing of occupations and groups at higher risk; guidance for NHS organisations on how to enhance their existing risk assessments particularly for potentially at-risk groups within their workforce; and translating the latest information into multiple languages and forms to meet accessibility needs.</p><p>In addition to these measures, on 4 June as Minister for Equalities, I announced Government’s next steps to address the disparities identified in the Public Health England (PHE) Report “COVID-19: review of disparities in risks and outcomes”. The Minister will be working with the Race Disparity Unit (RDU) and the Department for Health and Social Care with support from officials across other departments and their agencies to carry forward this vital work. This includes reviewing the effectiveness and impact of current actions being undertaken by relevant government departments and their agencies to directly lessen disparities in infection and death rates of COVID-19.</p>

answer text <p>The Government is committed to tackling transphobia and raising awareness of transgender issues. The Government Equalities Office regularly meets representatives of the transgender community to understand their key concerns, and we raise awareness of transgender issues across Government.</p><p> </p><p>On 20 November this year, as we have previously, the Government Equalities Office flew the rainbow flag to mark International Transgender Day of Remembrance to raise awareness of transphobia and to pay respects to those whose lives have been cut short by it.</p><p> </p><p>Current Government initiatives to raise awareness of transgender issues and transphobia include:</p><p>- a £2m fund launched in October 2014 to provide grants to organisations to provide support to schools to prevent and address homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying;</p><p>- guidance for service providers on how to meet the needs of transgender customers and service users;</p><p>- guidance for employers on how to recruit and retain transgender employees;</p><p> </p><p>- advice for transgender individuals on privacy.</p>
