answer text <p>The Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Bill, introduced by Wera Hobhouse MP, will deliver these two legislative commitments. We are aware of concerns raised by some Parliamentarians about the balance the Bill strikes between protecting free speech and tackling harassment. However, the Government remains committed to these measures: we continue to support the Bill and are engaging noble Lords to reassure them on these points.</p><p> </p><p>Ultimately, as the Bill has now passed to the House of Lords, progress is now in the hands of the Lords. I and my officials are in regular contact with the Lords and Commons Whips offices in relation to this Bill.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>The Equality Hub does not actively collect data on the prevalence of sexual harassment in the workplace in England. External data collection and media reports have shown that sexual harassment remains a persistent, prevalent problem across the country, and particularly in our workplaces. In 2021 a poll by the TUC found that around 7 in 10 disabled women surveyed had been sexually harassed at work, for example.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>The Government is committed to tackling sexual harassment in the workplace, to make sure that people feel safe and supported to thrive. In July 2021, as part of our strategy to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls, the Government committed to a new package of measures. This includes supporting the Equality and Human Rights Commission to develop a statutory Code of Practice, preparing our own practical guidance for employers, as well as two legislative commitments to strengthen protections for those affected by harassment at work.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

answer text <p>Every woman should be able to live without fear of harassment or violence in the workplace as much as anywhere else. In July 2021, as part of our strategy to tackle violence against women and girls, the Government announced a new package of measures which will strengthen protections for those affected by harassment at work.</p><p>We will introduce a new duty on employers to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, as well as explicit protections against harassment by third parties. We are also supporting the Equality and Human Rights Commission to develop a statutory Code of Practice on workplace harassment, as well as preparing our own practical guidance for employers on preventing this issue.</p><p>In addition, the Government will be shortly launching a communications campaign to raise awareness and challenge behaviours that constitute violence against women and girls, including workplace harassment.</p><p>The steps we are taking will not only raise awareness of the nature and prevalence of sexual harassment in the workplace, but also motivate employers to prioritise prevention and ultimately improve workplace practices and culture.</p>

answer text <p>Under the Equality Act 2010 employers have a legal responsibility to take all reasonable steps to protect their employees against workplace sexual harassment. The Government expects employers to take these responsibilities seriously. If they fail, employees can seek advice from Acas and, if necessary, take legal action in an Employment Tribunal.</p><p>Last year the Equality and Human Rights Commission, with the Government’s support, published guidance on harassment and sexual harassment at work.</p><p>In addition, the Government has consulted on sexual harassment in the workplace, focusing on whether the laws to protect people from harassment at work are operating effectively. We will be setting out the Government’s response to this shortly.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>Under the existing law employers are already liable for harassment carried out by their employees at work, unless they have taken ‘all reasonable steps’ to prevent it. A duty on employers to prevent harassment would not therefore change the legal responsibility of employers to take steps to prevent sexual harassment in their workplaces.</p><p>However, following a recommendation by the Women and Equalities Select Committee for an explicit duty on employers to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, the Government launched a consultation this month which will explore the evidence for introducing such a duty.</p><p> </p> more like this
