answer text
The vast majority of calls to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are either free or charged at local rate. However, the DVLA does operate three premium rate phone lines. One phone line allows car hire companies to check the entitlement to drive of those wishing to hire vehicles where needed. The revenue which DVLA receives covers the cost of providing this service to commercial companies.

The other two numbers allow customers to use translation services when contacting DVLA. This follows a decision made by the previous Government that callers who request a translation service will now pay for this via the cost of the call so that the customer bears the cost of the translation and not the Government or other DVLA customers.

The income accrued to DVLA for the last 5 years is

Financial year

£’000

2011-12

740

2012-13

825

2013-14

955

2014-15

1,026

2015-16

971

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is the only body within the Department for Transport that operates premium rate numbers.

answer text
Every two years the Department for Transport conducts a roadside survey to evaluate the level of vehicle excise duty compliance. The last survey took place in June 2015, eight months after the paper tax disc was abolished and the results were announced in November 2015. The survey estimated that 98.6% of vehicles were licensed, a drop of 0.8% from the previous survey in 2013. The next survey is due to take place in June of this year.

The DVLA operates a comprehensive package of measures to tackle vehicle excise duty evasion. These measures range from reminder letters, penalties and court prosecutions through to the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, wheel-clamping and the removal of unlicensed vehicles. The DVLA aims to make vehicle excise duty easy to pay but hard to avoid, regularly reviewing and refining processes to encourage compliance and deliver a robust enforcement regime.

In the third quarter of 2014 before the tax disc was abolished, there were 36,922,049 licensed vehicles. In the third quarter of 2016 there were 38,440,125 licensed vehicles.

This primarily benefits passengers who use the services concerned. As stated in the post-legislative assessment of the Local Transport Act 2008, partnerships can also result in other benefits, such as growth in patronage, better value for money and improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of bus networks.
more like this

answer text
The Chancellor’s Spending Review announcement in November 2015 set out an updated funding envelope of £55.7bn in 2015 prices for delivering the HS2 project. The envelope was previously £50.1bn in 2011 prices as set out in the 2013 Spending Round. The cost of building HS2 has not changed since the 2013 Spending Round, as the long-term funding envelope has simply been uprated to 2015 prices to take account of inflation. Cost estimates for specific sections of route were revised in accordance with these figures. We do not provide further funding breakdowns for specific items due to commercial sensitivities.

more like this
