answer text
Hydrogen has an important potential role to play in decarbonising heavier applications such as HGVs. There are specific use cases where hydrogen can offer advantages over batteries, for example where vehicles need longer ranges and more rapid refuelling (longer distance HGVs) or greater energy density. The Zero Emission Road Freight Demonstrator programme will showcase zero emission HGV technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells, at scale, on UK roads. The programme will build a strong evidence base to enable strategic, long-term, national infrastructure decisions to be made.

The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) supports the supply of renewable hydrogen used in transport by placing obligations on suppliers to ensure a percentage of the fuel supplied in the UK is from renewable sources where it can provide valuable carbon savings. The Government has expanded this support to include not just road vehicles, but also trains and shipping. Fuels supplied under the RTFO scheme deliver a third of domestic transport carbon savings under current carbon budgets.

All new HGVs less than or equal to 26 tonnes will be zero emission from 2035, and all new HGVs from 2040. To help the industry to prepare, our zero emission road freight demonstrators are expected to deploy hundreds of zero emission 40-44 tonne HGVs on UK roads and build the associated refuelling and recharging infrastructure needed to support their use.

The Department will also publish a zero emission HGV infrastructure strategy in due course. This will set strategic direction and outline the roles and responsibilities of both government and industry to ensure the delivery of the refuelling and recharging infrastructure required to meet the 2035 and 2040 dates for non-zero emission HGVs.

answer text
There are various estimates about the numbers of chargepoints required for HGVs. The Climate Change Committee suggested that 340,000 depot-based chargers would be needed by 2050 and over 900 ultra-rapid chargers. The European Automobile Manufacturer’s Association suggested that the UK would require 2,450 ultra-rapid chargers by 2025, increasing to 8,200 by 2030. Recent research for Transport and Environment suggested that a total of 400,000 chargers would be required by 2050, 93% of which would be located at depots.

more like this

answer text
The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), is the main scheme in the UK supporting producers of low carbon transport fuels. It stimulates the production of low carbon fuels by setting volume targets for their supply in road transport and non-road mobile machinery, with targets rising from 14.22% in 2023, to 17.4% from 2032 onwards.

The RTFO does not prescribe the volume in which renewable fuels must be supplied by sector. It provides flexibility to producers of low carbon fuels to determine where to deploy them and this may include logistics sectors. This enables targets to be met in a way that minimises cost to the consumer.

more like this
