star this property answer text
As I set out in my speech on 11 February, this Government condemns terrorism. We take very seriously the needs of victims of terrorism who, it is important to remember, suffered the most as a result of the Northern Ireland troubles. My Department has assisted the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee in its call for evidence on the issue of Libyan-sponsored IRA terrorism. The Government has every sympathy for the victims of these appalling atrocities. I would of course encourage anyone who can help the Committee with its work to do so.
more like this

At the meeting, and in accordance with the Fresh Start Agreement, we agreed new measures to enhance law enforcement co-operation aimed at tackling organised crime and criminality, including that linked to paramilitarism. In a concerted effort to tackle cross-jurisdictional organised crime, a Joint Agency Task Force has been announced by the United Kingdom Government, the Irish Government and the NI Executive.
more like this

star this property answer text
I have had no discussions with the Northern Ireland Executive on tackling isolation of women living in rural areas.

I have general discussions with Ministers in the Executive on a range of issues and this has included providing more opportunities for women to participate in political and public life. During the recent cross party talks, I also highlighted the importance of engaging women in community initiatives to combat the influence of paramilitary groupings. This is reflected in the Fresh Start Agreement.

The Government recognises the lack of female representation in politics and public life and further recognises the positive outcomes that result in tackling this inequality. As the 2015 Conservative Manifesto said: “We also want to increase the proportion of public appointments going to women in the next Parliament, as well as the number of female MPs.”

I have attended a number of events meeting women’s groups from across Northern Ireland and discussed the role of women in civic society and politics. This includes speaking at the Women’s Engagement Roadshow event in Belfast which highlighted the work Government is doing to improve the lives of women, and also provided women with a forum to voice their concerns about the issues that are important to them.

I welcome the fact that on 11 January Arlene Foster became Northern Ireland’s first woman First Minister.

star this property answer text
In the course of my duties I have regular contact with Ministers from the Irish Government.

In relation to the On the Runs (OTRs) scheme, I set out the Government’s position fully in my statement to the House of Commons on 9 September 2014. I made it clear that the scheme was at an end, and that there was no basis for any reliance on letters received by so-called OTRs under the scheme. There is no amnesty, immunity or exemption from prosecution. If the Government in 2010 had been presented with a scheme that amounted to an amnesty, it would have stopped it.

The Northern Ireland Office does not hold information on correspondence issued by the Irish Government. Whilst clearly a matter for the Irish Government, I understand that in response to recent media articles, the Irish Department for Justice and Equality have stated that “there is not, and never has been, in operation (in the Republic of Ireland) any form of amnesty for persons wanted for the commission of terrorist offences.”

Early in its investigation, the CMA considered the Northern Ireland motor insurance market and did not find signs of a failure of competition specific to that market.

The CMA noted that a number of recent initiatives in Northern Ireland could have an effect on premiums, including a new arbitration procedure for smaller claims and a graduated driving licence aimed at reducing the riskiness of young drivers.

Government measures have already removed a number of unnecessary costs from the system in England and Wales, and we are implementing further reforms to tackle exaggerated whiplash claims, inducement advertising by solicitors and fraudulent insurance claims. The Government fully expects the insurance industry to continue to meet their commitment to pass on the savings from Government reforms to their customers through lower premiums.
