	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/10/2015 answer text <p><del class="ministerial">The Ministry of Justice does not collect information centrally on Litigants in Person, or on who is cross examining witnesses in family court cases.</del></p><br /><p><ins class="ministerial">The Government takes the issue of domestic violence extremely seriously. A number of recent measures have been taken to strengthen and clarify the family court’s response to issues of domestic violence.</ins></p><br /><p><ins class="ministerial">Where criminal and <a href="http://www.cps.gov.uk/publications/prosecution/domestic/domv.html#a10" target="_blank">civil proceedings</a> are taking place at the same time, prosecutors will ensure that the court has the appropriate information to enable them to make other orders that prioritise the safety of victims, children and young people.</ins></p><br /><p><ins class="ministerial">Guidance to the family court makes clear that if domestic violence is alleged, the court must take this is into account when making decisions about contact with a child and the welfare of the child is of paramount importance.</ins></p><p><br /><ins class="ministerial"> Her Majesty’s Courts &amp; Tribunal Services (HMCTS) are constantly looking for ways to improve the service that they offer to victims and witnesses. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/06/2018 answer text <p><del class="ministerial">Following their introduction in July 2015, there have been 222 applications and 205 orders made for Female Genital Mutilation Protection Orders, up to 31 December 2017.</del></p><p> </p><p><del class="ministerial">In this period no breaches of an FGM Protection order have been dealt with in the criminal courts. In the Family Courts, proceedings for breach would be dealt with as a contempt of court matter and are not recorded separately. The information could therefore only be obtained at disproportionate cost.</del></p><p> </p><p><del class="ministerial">Statistics on FGM Protection Orders are publicly available as part of the Family Courts Statistics Quarterly series at https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/family-court-statistics-quarterly. The next publication of Family Court Statistics Quarterly is due on 28 June 2018. This will provide data up to the end of March 2018.</del></p><p><ins class="ministerial">As part of the Prison Safety and Reform White Paper published in November 2016, the Government committed to an increase of 2,500 Prison Officers by the end of 2018.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">Between the end of October 2016 (the closest data point in time to when the commitment was made) and the end of March 2018, the number of Band 3 to 5 prison officers (headcount) increased from 18,713 to 21,824; a net increase of 3,111.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">It is anticipated that 90 per cent of the new recruits will be on the landings by the summer and all of them will be operational by the end of the year.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">The first cohort of 52 graduates from the Unlocked scheme, which encourages the brightest graduates to consider a career in HMPPS, entered the HMPPS workforce in August last year – 15% higher than had been anticipated. Due to the popularity of the programme, up to 115 candidates will be recruited for the 2018 cohort. They are due to join the service in July 2018.”</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">Under the Prison Safety and Reform agenda, Governors have been given greater responsibility for workforce planning and determining their local organisational structure. This includes the number of officers they employ and Governors can implement changes to shift arrangements and resource deployment providing they remain within the agreed funding envelope.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">This empowerment of the Governor’s position is intended to enable them to make best use of resources to support prison safety and develop strategies to reduce reoffending. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/03/2015 answer text <p>The number of violent criminals in our prisons has increased by 40% in the past 10 years. A specialised system of restraint known as control and restraint (C&amp;R) has been developed over many years to ensure that prisoners can be controlled with minimum risk of injury to staff or prisoners. C&amp;R is a system of techniques used by a team of three officers as a last resort to bring a violent or refractory prisoner under control. Wherever possible staff should avoid the use of force and de-escalate the situation by persuasion or negotiation; if the techniques are applied then they are used for as short a time as possible. Healthcare staff examine all prisoners on whom force has been used.</p><p> </p><p>Violence in prisons is not tolerated; and assaults on our hardworking staff are unacceptable. That is why we have introduced a new protocol establishing that when there are serious assaults on prison staff, the perpetrators must be prosecuted unless there is a good reason why not. This will ensure that prisoners who attack staff are prosecuted and fully brought to justice. It will mean that more of the prisoners who assault staff will spend longer behind bars.</p><p> </p><p>All prisons submit a central monthly return providing the number of times force has been used in the prison with details of any injuries sustained. Central data identifies the number of individuals injured rather than the number of incidents where an injury occurred . Use of force incidents may involve multiple prisoners, for example, force used to separate a fight. To identify the number of incidents would require manual interrogation of use of force documentation held at establishments and could only be achieved at disproportionate cost.</p><p> </p><p>Central data only records whether an injury resulted in hospitalisation or not. To identify if the injuries sustained were minor or serious would also require manual interrogation of use of force documentation held at establishments and could only be achieved at disproportionate When an offender being supervised by Probation dies, the Probation provider must examine the circumstances of the death and identify areas to improve practice. While we work extremely closely with each offender before and after release to help them find the support they need, we do not have sole responsibility for caring for these offenders. Where this amounts to a criminal offence, prisoners should expect to be investigated by the police and face more serious sanctions.</p><p>We are committed to improving safety across the prison estate and are already taking action.
