star this property answer text <p>We do not hold the individual costs for responses to incidents logged via the Maintenance Helpdesk as these works are captured by an overall budget that covers routine maintenance and/or larger refurbishment works. It is not possible to break down this amount according to works repairing pest damage.</p><p>In February 2023, the Heritage Collections team treated 17 pieces of the Historic Furniture and Decorative Arts collection for moth infestation at a total cost of £4,512.81+VAT. There has been no other treatment in the last three years.</p> more like this

The priority of the House Service is to provide the results of divisions as speedily as possible while maintaining its impartiality and not becoming part of the commentary. The House has recently invested in a number of new ways of keeping the public updated on Parliamentary business and division results, including further development of Parliament Live TV and UK Parliament Now, and the House of Commons Twitter account regularly links to these to keep followers updated.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Between August and December there have been four major incidents relating to the desk telephones provided in Members’ offices.</p><p>Work-arounds were deployed where possible; two incidents remain outstanding and are expected to be resolved in December 2022.</p><p>The response and resolution of these incidents was protracted due to the complexity of the underlying software and existing telephony infrastructure.</p><p>Earlier this year a Voice Programme was established to address the need for improvements to voice services for Members and Peers. This will be targeted to improve the user experience and reduce the risk of disruption to parliamentary services.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The House Administration wants to enable schoolchildren across the UK to have the opportunity to visit Parliament. It has therefore been actively considering the impact of rising travel costs and revised constituency boundaries on the Education Travel Subsidy.</p><p>In June 2023, the Finance Committee considered and agreed proposals to increase the subsidy in light of rising travel costs. This was implemented in September 2023, but the Committee asked for additional increases to be considered. A further proposal was brought to the Finance Committee in November 2023 and the Commission in December 2023 to amend some elements of the subsidy and implement further increases. These were agreed and will be applied from April 2024. The changes are expected to increase visit numbers from outside the south-east.</p><p>The Commission noted in December 2023 that a deep dive review of the Education Travel Subsidy programme would take place in the third quarter of 2024/25 which would take account of constituency boundary changes.</p><p>The travel subsidy allows eligible state-funded schools to claim between 50 and 75 per cent of travel costs back, subject to maximum claim caps. Constituencies are set into three geographic based bands, A, B or C to determine eligibility. Recent changes to subsidy level are given below.</p><p>Travel subsidy in 2022</p><ul><li>Band A: Not eligible</li><li>Band B: 50% of receipted travel costs, up to a maximum claim of £800</li><li>Band C: 75% of receipted travel costs, up to a maximum claim of £1600</li></ul><p /><p>Travel subsidy as of 1 September 2023</p><ul><li>Band A: Not eligible</li><li>Band B: 50% of receipted travel costs, up to a maximum claim of £1,000</li><li>Band C: 75% of receipted travel costs, up to a maximum claim of £2,000</li></ul><p /><p>Travel subsidy changes for 1 April 2024 will be announced to Members in the coming weeks.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The Parliamentary Travel Office (PTO) books train tickets through Trainline.</p><p>Rail tickets sold in the UK are regulated and the cost of booking tickets is the same irrespective of where the ticket is purchased.</p><p>Parliament, however, receives the 3% commission paid to the PTO service provider by Trainline – which effectively makes the tickets cheaper than purchasing elsewhere.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The approximate cost of commissioning, out of hours attendance, set up and testing of the temporary mechanism for all the occasions during the project when Big Ben has sounded is £96,000.</p><p>The overall contract value for the project includes all the costs of initial commissioning of the temporary mechanism used for this purpose and testing and operating it on each occasion it has been used since the project started in 2017. The mechanism was used on 10 occasions, with Big Ben also being sounded several times in the run-up to each New Year’s Eve, as well as for testing in advance of each occasion that was marked.</p><p>Arrangements for striking Big Ben were coordinated round the planned works so as to minimise the impact on the project costs and to ensure there was no delay to the project. The temporary striking mechanism used during the project will be kept as an integral part of the refurbished clock mechanism’s contingency arrangements.</p><p>The Elizabeth Tower and the Great Clock are currently undergoing the most extensive conservation project ever carried out in the 160 years since the bell began to strike. The clock mechanism, which usually powers the hammer that strikes the Great Bell (Big Ben), has been dismantled and removed for refurbishment.</p><p>In 2017 the House of Commons Commission decided that during the Elizabeth Tower refurbishment project, Big Ben should only sound for Remembrance Sunday, Armistice Day and New Year's Eve, to allow the project team to schedule works around those occasions. The Commission reconfirmed the decision in 2018.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The budget for the refurbishment of Elizabeth Tower, most recently approved in early 2020, is £79.7 million.</p><p>Since then, further provision of up to £9 million has also been made to cover additional costs relating to the impact of COVID-19, which, as with almost all construction projects across the country, has affected the progress of work.</p><p>These costs arise from the four-month site closure in 2020, investment in COVID-secure measures and the necessity of reduced productivity on site until November 2020 – introduced to ensure the safety of the project’s workforce.</p><p>This figure has been scrutinised by independent consultants, who are confident in the financial projections that have been developed by teams in the House Service, recognising the exceptionality of the project and its highly specific requirements.</p> more like this
