answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 03/02/2020 answer text <p>Small boats crossing the English Channel were an infrequent phenomenon prior to 2018. Incidences involving small boats, as a result, were not recorded with this level of granularity.</p><p> </p><p>However, information was provided to the Home Affairs Select Committee (HASC) on 5<sup>th</sup> March 2019 which gave the number of migrants detected entering the UK by small boats from January 2018 to February 2019 as 428.</p><p> </p><p>On 22 July 2019 the then Home Secretary Sajid Javid provided an additional figure to Home Affairs Select Committee that up to 21 July 2019, 725 migrants had crossed the English Channel.</p><p>We anticipate publication of 2019/2020 data in the coming months.</p> answering member constituency Great Yarmouth answering member printed Brandon Lewis question first answered 03/02/2020 15:29:24 answering member 4009 label Biography information for Sir Brandon Lewis

For the first time, the NECC brings together law enforcement and justice agencies, government departments, regulatory bodies and the private sector with a shared objective of driving down serious organised economic crime, protecting the public and safe-guarding the prosperity and reputation of the UK as a financial centre.</p><p>The NECC was formally launched on 5 November 2018. It includes officers from the NCA, HM Revenue and Customs, City of London Police, Serious Fraud Office, Financial Conduct Authority, Crown Prosecution Service and the Home Office. The government recognises that the NECC forms an integral part of an enhanced system-wide response to tackling economic crime. For financial year 2019/20, the government has committed an additional £48 million investment to tackle illicit finance. This investment will fund the development of new capabilities including the NECC. Hon member for Dover to the answer of 12 February which states:</p><p>The Home Office works closely with partners in the UK and overseas to strike people smuggling at source – identifying and dismantling the organ-ised crime groups that facilitate illegal immigration. Additionally, the UK works abroad to reduce factors that may push or force people to attempt such journeys - through creating jobs, tackling modern slavery, providing education and delivering life-saving humanitarian assistance in response to conflicts and natural disasters.</p><p>In November a new UK-France Coordination and Information Centre opened in Calais to strengthen our joint efforts to tackle all kinds of crimi-nality at the border. Border Force is working alongside Police Aux Fron-tieres as part of a 24/7 operation to help prevent illegal attempts to cross the shared border and exchange intelligence between UK and French agencies to combat cross-border criminality.</p><p>Despite our successes in preventing attempts to enter the UK illegally, we are not complacent. We will continue to work closely with our French coun-terparts to maintain border security and keep legitimate passengers and trade moving.</p><p>At juxtaposed controls and ports around the country, Border Force officers use some of the most advanced detection technology available to find and stop migrants attempting to reach the UK illegally.</p><p>We have also invested tens of millions of pounds in new infrastructure to enhance border security, with all freight vehicles entering the UK screened for people being smuggled into the UK using a range of techniques, which include using carbon dioxide detectors and motion sensors as well as sniff-er dogs to detect clandestine on board lorries.</p><p>We have taken steps to address the possibility that there may be a dis-placement of clandestine migrant activity towards smaller and less fre-quented ports, as enhanced controls at the juxtaposed ports have become increasingly effective.</p> answering member constituency Romsey and Southampton North answering member printed Caroline Nokes question first answered 19/02/2019 16:04:51 answering member 4048 label Biography information for Caroline Nokes
