answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 03/02/2023 answer text <p>The Home Office has a legal obligation to provide support to asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute. The support package provided usually consists of free, furnished accommodation (with utility bills and council tax paid) and a weekly cash allowance to meet other essential living needs.</p><p>From 21 December 2022 the government increased the main rate of asylum support that is provided under sections 4 and 95 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 to £45 per week on an interim basis whilst we complete the current annual review of the asylum support allowance.</p> answering member constituency Newark answering member printed Robert Jenrick question first answered 03/02/2023 17:15:41 answering member 4320 label Biography information for Robert Jenrick

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/05/2021 answer text <p>Asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute are provided with furnished accommodation with utilities provided free of charge and a weekly cash allowance. The level of the allowance is reviewed each year to ensure it remains sufficient to meet their essential living needs (the legal test). Currently, the standard allowance is £39.63 per week for the asylum seeker and each of any dependants in their household. The allowance is reduced if the individual is accommodated in a full-board facility where food and other essential items are provided free.</p><p>There are no plans to provide an additional £20 or to link the level of the allowance with the level of Universal Credit.
