answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/05/2024 answer text <p>Between 2018/19 and 2023/24, the National Health Service increased spending on mental health services in England by £4.7 billion in cash terms, compared to the target of £3.4 billion set out at the time of the NHS Long Term Plan. All integrated care boards, including Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board, are also on track to meet the Mental Health Investment Standard in 2023/24 by increasing their investment in mental health services, in line with their overall increase in funding for the year.</p><p> </p><p>Almost £16 billion was invested in mental health in 2022/23, enabling over 3.6 million people, including those in the Southport constituency, to be in contact with mental health services, a 10% increase on the previous year.</p><p> </p><p>We have also made positive progress on our ambition to grow the mental health workforce by an extra 27,000 staff between 2019/20 and 2023/24. Any clinician who suspects haemochromatosis can order this testing via local genomic laboratory hubs.</p><p>Seven NHS GMS Alliances play an important role in supporting the strategic systematic embedding of genomic medicine in end-to-end clinical pathways and clinical specialities. They help to achieve equitable access to standardised end-to-end pathways of care, inclusive of genomic testing, clinical genetics, and genomic counselling services. The AgeX trial is looking at the impact of increasing or decreasing the screening age for breast screening, and the UK NSC will review its findings when they are available.</p><p>The UK NSC can be alerted to any new published peer reviewed evidence which may suggest the case for a new screening programme, or changes to an existing one. As part of this, the NIHR and the Medical Research Council have funded the world’s largest genome-wide association study of ME/CFS. This £3.2 million study, termed DecodeME, will analyse samples from 25,000 people with ME/CFS to search for genetic differences that may indicate underlying causes, or an increased risk of developing the condition. By helping us to understand ME/CFS better, this research has the potential to lead to new treatments for the condition.</p><p>Integrated care boards (ICBs) are responsible for commissioning specialist ME/CFS services that meet the needs of their population, subject to local prioritisation and funding. The process of commissioning services should take into account best practice guidance, such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s guidance on ME/CFS diagnosis and management, published in October 2021. In addition, in October 2023, the British Association of Clinicians in ME/CFS published the ME/CFS National Services Survey. The equivalent information for 2021/22 is not available.</p><p>The Department commissions research through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The NIHR supports a wide range of research studies in mental health, and launched a Mental Health Research Initiative in 2021, which included a £30 million investment to target acute regional and community mental health needs, and strengthen the nation’s capacity for high impact research. Further activity is underway to establish up to 10 Mental Health Research Groups in areas across England which experience a high mental health burden, but which currently have limited or absent research capacity.
