answer text
The National Health Service Long Term Plan commits to test four-week waiting times for adult and older adult community mental health teams, with selected local areas. The exact scope and timelines of these pilots are yet to be finalised, but we envisage that this will include testing waiting times for adult eating disorder services in those areas in receipt of new funding to expand these services.

We are committed to ensuring everyone with an eating disorder has access to the best quality of care to meet their needs. We are investing an extra £30 million each year for eating disorders and the NHS is treating more children and young people with an eating disorder than ever before. The NHS Long Term Plan commits to continuing the increase in spending for children and young people’s mental health services, which will grow faster than the overall spend on mental health, which will itself be growing faster than the overall NHS budget.

To raise awareness of mental health, including eating disorders, the Department is one of the funders, with Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Funding, of the Time to Change campaign, which is led by Rethink Mental Illness, in partnership with Mind. The campaign’s guidance and advice is available at the following link:

https://www.time-to-change.org.uk/about-mental-health/types-problems/eating-disorders

answer text
NHS England does not hold this information as rejection on the grounds of weight and Body Mass Index is not in line with any of the published guidance such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) clinical guidance on managing and treating eating disorders and the Eating Disorder Commissioning Guide, and should not occur. NICE’s guidance on eating disorders can be viewed via the following link:

https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng69

Information on NHS England’s eating disorders programme is available here:

https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/cyp/eating-disorders/

For children and young people aged between eight and 18 years, the Government is investing £150 million to expand eating disorder services and staff for 70 extended or new established community eating disorder services. answer text
For children and young people with a suspected eating disorder (up to 19 years), the Government is investing £150 million to expand eating disorder services and staff for 70 extended or new established community eating disorder services. This means at least 3,350 children and young people a year will receive swift, effective eating disorder treatment in the community.

The Government has commissioned Health Education England to repeat the 2015 baseline audit of the children and young people’s mental health workforce, across all statutory and voluntary sector providers. This will include staff delivering care in the new or extended community eating disorder services. This data will allow NHS England to monitor progress with increasing the staffing of eating disorders services to improve access and deliver care in line with the published pathway guidance and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence clinical guidance.

The planned spend by clinical commissioning groups on children and young people’s eating disorders in 2017/18 is £46,717,000 which includes the £30 million per year in clinical commissioning group baselines. This additional funding contributes to increasing staff to create the community eating disorder multidisciplinary teams.
