unstar this property answer text
A total of 7947 suspected adverse reaction reports with human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines have been reported to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) via the Yellow Card Scheme up to 3 December 2014. It is important to note that a Yellow Card report is not proof of a side effect occurring, but a suspicion by the reporter that the vaccine may have been the cause. The frequency of known side effects is listed in the product information (the Summary of Product Characteristics for health professionals and the Patient Information Leaflet) which are provided with the vaccines.

The following table provides a breakdown of these reports by brand and seriousness.

Vaccine Brand

Total number of reports

Number of serious reports (% of total)

Cervarix

6,260

1,762 (28%)

Gardasil

1,200

459 (38%)

HPV Brand unspecified

488

308 (63%)

Total

7,948*

2529 (32%)

Note:

*The total number of reports received will not equal the total in the table above as some reports may have more than one suspect vaccine.

The MHRA does not hold data on age-specific usage therefore we are unable to provide the age-specific rate that these figures represent. The MHRA continually reviews safety of the vaccine and, following administration of over 7 million doses in the UK alone, no serious new risks have been identified. The benefits in protecting against HPV-related disease far outweigh any possible side effects of the vaccine.

It held a stakeholder consultation between 12 November and 7 January and we understand that JCVI considered the outcome of the consultation at its meeting on 4 February 2015, as it reviewed its provisional advice on MSM.

Any implementation of an HPV MSM vaccination programme will be dependent on JCVI’s final advice. answer
unstar this property answer text
In 2008 when forming its recommendation for vaccination against the human papilloma virus (HPV) in the United Kingdom the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) did not recommend vaccination of boys because the evidence from modelling undertaken by the Health Protection Agency (now Public Health England (PHE)) indicated vaccinating boys was unlikely to be cost-effective (Jit et al., 2008).

JCVI keeps the eligibility criteria of all vaccination programmes under review. In October 2013 JCVI recommended a HPV sub-committee be formed to consider a number of issues including the potential extension of the programme to include adolescent boys, because of new and emerging evidence on the association of HPV vaccine types with non-cervical cancers. JCVI requested that modelling be undertaken by PHE to re-examine the impact and cost-effectiveness of extending the HPV vaccination programme to adolescent boys in light of this evidence. The Department has also commissioned the University of Warwick to conduct an independent modelling assessment on vaccinating adolescent boys.

answer
unstar this property answer text
On the advice of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, Public Health England (PHE) agreed to analyse the impact and cost effectiveness of gender neutral human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination using an HPV cervical screening model already being developed within PHE. This work was planned to follow the completion of a model to look at the cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination of men who have sex with men in sexual health clinics. Quality assurance processes have led to a delay in completion of the HPV cervical screening model, which has delayed the commencement of the modelling work on adolescent boys.

more like this
