star this property answer text <p>The Government hugely values the contribution of all the EU27 nationals working in the National Health Service. The Prime Minister has publicly reassured all European Union citizens who have chosen to make their homes and livelihoods in the United Kingdom, that she wants them to stay. Furthermore, the agreement announced on 8 December 2017 between the UK and the EU Commission safeguarded the rights of people who have built their lives in the UK and EU, following the UK’s exit from the EU. NHS Improvement is leading a programme of work to improve staff retention in trusts across England.</p><p> </p><p>The latest figures from NHS Digital show that there were almost 3,300 more EU nationals - including almost 500 more doctors - working in the NHS in September 2017 than before the referendum result.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Public Health England and UNICEF UK have developed a toolkit to support commissioning of evidence-based interventions to improve breastfeeding rates across England, including provision of effective professional support to mothers and their families through implementation of the Baby Friendly Initiative in every maternity unit.</p><p> </p><p>The majority of maternity units (91%) and health visiting services (85%) across the United Kingdom are now working towards Baby Friendly accreditation, and new neonatal and children’s centre standards have been introduced to help services improve care.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The training curriculum for general practitioners (GPs) is set by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and has to meet the standards set by the General Medical Council (GMC). The curriculum set by the RCGP educates GP trainees in identifying and managing those conditions most common to primary care. Meeting the needs of children and young people is currently reflected in a specific section of the GP curriculum.</p><p>The current review of postgraduate curricula by the GMC provides an opportunity to ensure curricula reflect general professional capabilities and to ensure all training requirements are met.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The causes of health inequalities are multi-faceted and highly complex. The Department’s aim is to take action to promote and support people to have healthier lifestyles and to tackle differences in access to, and outcomes from, our health and public health services.</p><p> </p><p>Our commitment and approach to tackling health inequalities – and social injustice – is underpinned by the legal duty enshrined in the 2012 Health and Social Care Act, which is to work to reduce inequalities.</p><p> </p><p>We have introduced transparent high level measures to reduce health inequalities in the Public Health Outcomes Framework and NHS Outcomes Framework. In March 2015, we published an additional list of selected NHS Outcomes Framework indicators for which health inequalities data has been made available. We have also recently published the NHS Mandate for 2018/19 and the Public Health England (PHE) Remit letter for 2018/19 which clearly set out those organisations’ responsibilities and work on reducing inequalities in health.</p><p> </p><p>Tackling health inequalities is a core part of PHE’s Strategic Vision for 2020. Statistics, evidence and tools are being developed to support action by local authorities and the wider public health system to take effective action on health equity.</p><p> </p><p>There is more to do to systematically address inequalities and NHS England aims to improve and measure the impact of their programmes and also better support local commissioners and providers in their work. The NHS England Board discussed health inequalities and life expectancy at a meeting in March 2018, and plans are being developed to take work forward. star this property answer text <p>The people who work in our National Health Service are one of our greatest assets and we are committed to championing them. We will continue to promote the NHS as a great employer, as well as celebrating the excellent work being done by individuals across the health service.</p><p> </p><p>For example, we have recently announced that we are expanding medical training places by 1,500 from September 2018, and the process is now complete for allocating those places to medical schools across the country who will deliver the training, including five entirely new medical schools.</p><p> </p><p>Furthermore, in December of last year, Health Education England launched a draft workforce strategy in order to set out a comprehensive system wide understanding of our workforce needs for the future. The draft strategy formed the basis of a consultation which is now closed, and a final strategy will be released later this year.</p> more like this
