answer text
As we made clear at the UN Security Council remote meeting on the Middle East Peace Process on 20 May, the UK is concerned by the continued demolition of Palestinian property by Israeli authorities, and repeated incidents of settler violence at this time. In all but the most exceptional of circumstances, demolitions are contrary to International Humanitarian Law. The practice causes unnecessary suffering to ordinary Palestinians and weakens the capacity of Palestinians to withstand the impact of COVID-19. We condemn any incidence of violence by settlers against Palestinians. We welcome the efforts of Israeli authorities to address settler violence, and urge them to thoroughly investigate every instance to bring those responsible to justice and end the culture of impunity. During this fragile period, we call on both parties to avoid any provocative action which might undermine the cooperation that is so critical. We have also stressed the importance of the Israel security forces providing appropriate protection to the Palestinian civilian population.

answer text
The UK has repeatedly made clear to Israel our longstanding concerns about the manner in which the Israel Defense Forces police non-violent protests and the border areas, including use of live ammunition. We will continue to do so. We fully support an independent and transparent investigation into the deadly events in Gaza. We welcome that the Israeli Military Advocate General has ordered five criminal investigations which relate to eleven separate instances of Palestinian fatalities during the Gaza border protests. These investigations are ongoing. Given the importance of accountability, it is vital these investigations are independent and transparent; that their findings are made public; and, if wrongdoing is found, that those responsible be held to account.
more like this

answer text
In the UK, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) operates only in London and the South East. The FCO offered apprenticeships for the first time in 2015. Given the sensitivity of FCO work, we are only able to offer a limited number of apprenticeships. We offered fewer than ten apprenticeships in this first year, and are therefore unable to confirm the precise numbers or locations since this might enable individual identities to be revealed. Due to the small numbers, we are also unable to confirm the number remaining in a job in the Civil Service. We are currently in the process of recruiting twenty three apprentices, the majority of whom will be offered a position in Milton Keynes (South East) and the rest in London.
more like this

According to figures from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Israeli forces have opened fire into the Gaza Access Restricted Areas on land and sea on at least 696 occasions since then. Officials from our Embassy in Tel Aviv have raised our concerns over the Israel Defence Force’s use of live fire in Gaza with the Israeli Government. answer text
While we do not speak to Hamas, we have had discussions with the other parties pressing for urgent measures to relieve the humanitarian suffering of those in Gaza, including the rebuilding of homes destroyed in the Gaza conflict of 2014. The UK regularly urges the Israeli authorities to intensify measures to support Gaza’s reconstruction and economic development. We are also urging Egypt, which has played an important role in encouraging the international community to support the reconstruction of Gaza, to show maximum flexibility in opening the Rafah crossing. We receive regular representations from the Palestinian Authority on rebuilding of homes in Gaza, and have urged the Palestinian Authority to take steps to return to Gaza.

The UK is also supporting the temporary Gaza Reconstruction Mechanism to facilitate the import of construction materials into Gaza. The Department for International Development is providing £0.7 million to the Materials Monitoring Unit which oversees and monitors the import, storage, supply and use of construction materials into Gaza.

The UK frequently urges the parties to address these problems and to take the necessary steps to ensure Gaza’s reconstruction and economic recovery.
