answer text
The UK representative to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) participated in the annual general conference of the Electoral Commission Forum of SADC countries in August 2016, attended by President Khama of Botswana, the previous Chair of SADC. We also regularly emphasise the importance of free, fair and credible elections, in accordance with SADC's own guidelines, in our bilateral dialogues with countries in the region. We are also providing practical support, for example, we accredited a team of observers to last year's local elections in South Africa and will do the same for this year's general elections in Lesotho. Her Majesty's Government is also working through a multi-donor programme to improve the electoral environment in advance of elections in Zimbabwe in 2018
more like this

answer text
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office uses its Magna Carta Fund to support projects across a wide range of human rights and democracy-building themes, including freedom of religion or belief, which has a prominent place in the Fund's published strategy. For that reason, we welcome the fact that enough strong project proposals have been put forward by our posts and implementing partners to ensure that expenditure under this theme can continue. Project proposals are judged on merit and value for money. We therefore do not have specific targets for the proportion of expenditure dedicated to specific human rights themes.
more like this

Our concerns are reflected in the latest update to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office annual human rights report.

We regularly raise our concerns about the protection of minority communities, including religious minorities at senior level, with the government of Pakistan. During his visit to Pakistan in November, the Foreign Secretary, my Rt Hon. We have been concerned by recent reports of police violence, both during by-elections and in response to civil protests. We regularly urge the government of Zimbabwe to end human rights abuses and restore internationally accepted standards. British officials visited Norton, the location of the most recent by-election, on two occasions, as part of a ‘Diplomatic Watch’ observation mission with Australian, US and EU colleagues. They spoke to the candidates, urging calm. The group will now write to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, outlining its observations.
