answer text
We continue to monitor closely human rights developments in Turkey. British officials regularly raise human rights issues in their contacts with Turkish political leaders and officials at all levels. I discussed human rights and EU accession with my Turkish counterpart when he visited my constituency in August. We strongly encourage Turkey to continue work towards the full protection of fundamental rights, especially in the areas of women’s and minority rights, freedom of religion and freedom of expression. We welcome progress made thus far, and as the EU Commission highlights, further sustained work is needed to meet EU standards. The UK Government continues to support Turkey’s EU accession process and is working closely with Turkey, EU Member States, and European institutions on this. It is a positive sign that Turkey-EU relations have been reinvigorated following the successful Turkey-EU summit in Brussels on 29 November.
more like this

answer text We regularly raise the issue of religious freedom in bilateral discussions with the Turkish government. In January 2015 our Ambassador in Ankara discussed, inter alia, freedom of religion with Professor Dr Mehmet Görmez, the Head of the Diyanet (Presidency of Religious Affairs) of Turkey. Our Embassy in Ankara has regular meetings with religious groups and civil society to discuss the strengthening of the freedom of religion in Turkey. The European Commission’s 2014 Annual Progress Report on Turkey confirmed that freedom of worship continued to be generally respected. more like this

answer text
We regularly raise human rights issues with the Turkish government and are, this week, contributing to the UN’s Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights in Turkey. I raised concerns over media freedoms with my Turkish counterpart on 18 December 2014.

We continue to encourage Turkey to work towards meeting EU standards on human rights, especially in the areas of freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and minority rights. We welcome the progress to date including the implementation of a fourth Judicial Reform Package and the adoption of an Action Plan for the Prevention of Human Rights Violations in 2014.

There is more to be done. The EU’s Annual Progress Report 2014 on Turkey underlines that further work is required to strengthen the human rights institutional framework and bring Turkish human rights legislation in line with European and international standards. The report highlighted areas of concern over the restrictions on the freedom of expression (including temporary bans on Twitter and YouTube), the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, and the rule of law. We support this assessment and, together with our EU partners, expect Turkey as an EU candidate country, to respect all fundamental freedoms and remain committed to supporting further progress on its continuing reform agenda.

We have not made representations on these specific allegations, but maintain regular dialogue with Turkey on the humanitarian situation in the region. We recognise the challenges facing Turkey because of the conflicts in Syria and Iraq and appreciate the Turkish government’s considerable humanitarian efforts in the region.
