These regions suffer from high levels of violence, which have driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. We have consistently called for restraint, an end to the violence, and for investigations into all reports of human rights violations. On 23 April, I publicly welcomed publication of the findings of the investigation into the appalling violence in Ngarbuh and reiterated our call for the Cameroonian authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice, ensure respect for human rights and redouble their efforts to resolve the conflict.</p><p>The UK continues to call for inclusive dialogue, and we welcomed the passing of legislation concerning bilingualism and special status for the North-West and South-West regions in December 2019. Commitments and legislation now need to be implemented in a timely manner to support genuine decentralisation of power and to tackle the root causes of the conflict. The British High Commissioner to Cameroon regularly engages in high-level discussions with the Government of Cameroon on the Anglophone crisis, including the mediation process led by the Swiss Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. We continue to shine a spotlight on the crisis and raise our concerns in multinational fora and with international partners. At the UN Security Council on 12 February, the UK highlighted the significant impact of the crisis on children. At the UN Human Rights Council on 27 February, the UK raised concerns about the protection of civilians in Cameroon.</p><p>The UK is committed to supporting civilians affected by the ongoing crisis in the North-West and South-West regions and we have made a £2 million contribution to the UN response, supporting 34,000 people with essential supplies, such as mosquito nets, hygiene kits and nutrition support. We continue to call for unhindered humanitarian access to the affected population. These regions suffer from high levels of violence, which has driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.</p><p>We continue to raise our concerns with the Government of Cameroon, and discuss in multilateral fora including the Commonwealth and the United Nations (UN). We welcome the joint visit to Cameroon in November 2019 by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Secretary-General of La Francophonie and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The three leaders urged the Government of Cameroon to make every effort to restore security, justice and the conditions for the resumption of normal life in the regions affected by the crisis. The UK also welcomes the efforts of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) in its ongoing work to monitor peace and security developments in the country, and engagement by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who visited Cameroon in May 2019. We urge continued cooperation between the Government of Cameroon and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).</p><p>The UK continues to call for inclusive dialogue which addresses the root causes of the crisis. Violence is driving people from their homes and impacting on the lives of ordinary civilians, particularly women and children. The UK is providing lifesaving assistance to thousands of people following a £2.5m contribution in December 2018 to the UN emergency appeal to address the crisis. We continue to call on the Government of Cameroon to take urgent action, with the support of regional partners and the wider international community, to prevent further deterioration, including the establishment of a credible political dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict. The British Government regularly raises concerns about Cameroon at the highest levels including at UN Security Council on 4 June and when I met with Cameroon's High Commissioner to the UK on 30 April. Our Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN raised UK concerns during an informal discussion on Cameroon at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on 13 May noting that humanitarian assistance and dialogue to tackle root cases of the conflict were needed. The UK also raised concerns in a statement at the bi-annual UNOCA (UN Office for Central Africa) briefing in the UNSC on 13 December 2018, calling for urgent action by the Government of Cameroon to prevent further conflict.
