answer text
Minister Mitchell set out further details of the global food security and nutrition campaign in his recent speech on international development at Chatham House. This included announcing an event towards the end of the year to bring together British and international expertise in tackling hunger and starvation with the support of the academic, medical, research, philanthropic, and NGO and charity community. We will publish further information on actions that have been taken to deliver the campaign throughout the year, for example funding announcements and details of Ministerial visits and engagements (such as this publication on .gov.uk on the UK-hosted Agriculture Breakthrough: https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/agriculture-breakthrough-ministerial-meeting-minister-trevelyans-speech-in-washington-dc). The Department engages regularly with a range of stakeholders to consult and inform them on the progress of the campaign.
more like this

In 2019, pre-pandemic, already over 3 billion world-wide were unable to afford sufficient food to be food secure and healthy. answer text
FCDO is monitoring food security. Global food production will be constrained, including by high fertiliser prices. Whilst there will be no absolute risk to food availability, we expect hotspots of reduced availability and increased levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. The challenge will be possibly unprecedented numbers of people not able to afford or access the food that they need to survive and live a healthy and productive life.

FCDO is addressing underlying causes; promoting robust food systems in low-income countries; saving lives in famine risk areas; and ensuring an effective international response, including through a focus on the most vulnerable.
more like this

answer text
The UK is working with our international partners to address the underlying causes and promote robust food systems in low-income countries shaped by our Agriculture Development Policy (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dfids-conceptual-framework-on-agriculture). Over 15 programmes in Africa and Asia aim to improve income and productivity of smallholder farmers through better access to market, finance and sustainable practices. The Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusiness (CASA) programme and the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) promote innovations, investment and businesses that create jobs and boost food production. UK funding for agricultural research and development is promoting new food and agriculture technologies, including new crop varieties that are nutritious, higher-yielding and resilient to climate change.
more like this
