star this property answer text
I understand the strength of feeling about Varosha, the present state of which reflects the consequences of the continued division of Cyprus.

We fully support all relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 550 and 789. We have raised this issue with the Turkish Cypriots and with the Turkish authorities. I remain convinced that, ultimately, a comprehensive settlement is the best chance of resolving these complex issues. The UK will continue to support the UN-led negotiations which will address the questions of Varosha, Famagusta and other issues related to a comprehensive settlement.

We also welcome measures to build confidence between the two communities. These can have great value in fostering reconciliation between the communities and in facilitating a comprehensive settlement. I was very pleased that on 2 March the Foreign and Commonwealth Office hosted a meeting at which the Chambers of Commerce of both Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities were represented by their Presidents, both of whom spoke eloquently about the way in which a settlement would increase the prosperity of everyone on the island.

star this property answer text The UK will work to reinvigorate its relationship with the people of Sri Lanka and President Sirisena’s government. We already have strong links in trade, education, tourism and between our people. The President’s election is a new opportunity for Sri Lanka to build a stable, prosperous and inclusive future for all Sri Lankans. President Sirisena’s early visit to the UK from 7-11 March clearly expressed a renewed friendship between our two countries. The UK has offered support to the newly elected President and Prime Minister as they seek to implement their ambitious reform programme and take steps to reconcile all Sri Lankan people. However, we have been clear we want to see Sri Lanka deliver on its commitments to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights by September. more like this

star this property answer text
The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), has discussed our EU reform plans with 19 Member States as part of his EU programme of visits. He plans to visit the remaining Member States before the election. The Foreign Secretary has met a range of Presidents, Ministers of Government, Officials, and leaders from Civil Society and business. He has been clear on his desire to seek agreement with our colleagues in the EU on the details of proposed reforms, which will be developed in discussion with Member States in the coming months. In the Foreign Secretary’s discussions he has covered the full range of issues that this Government would like to see reformed in the EU; Fairness, Democratic Accountability, Competitiveness and Migrant Access to Benefits. The Foreign Secretary has found a renewed focus on the economic aspects of the reform agenda, recognition that much of the UK’s reform agenda is now part of EU thinking and the clear message that Member States want the UK to remain in the EU.

During the recent period of unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) officials at our Embassy in Kinshasa were in regular contact with the DRC authorities, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued a press statement on 20 January urging calm and restraint and calling on the DRC government and Parliament to listen to the concerns of protesters.

Our Ambassador was in contact with the Government of DRC at the highest levels and with opposition politicians throughout the protests. He urged for a consensus on electoral reform to be built that would help to forge the path to free, fair and peaceful elections in 2016. On 25 January a revised electoral law was passed, and on 26 January an FCO press statement welcomed the revised electoral law which sought to address some of the protestors’ concerns. We are pleased that calls for an end to violence were heeded.

more like this
