star this property answer text <p>On the 18 October HMG announced the appointment of Jennifer Townson as Modern Slavery and Migration Envoy. Migration and modern slavery are separate issues which are closely linked and this combined enovy role will be able to effectively address these synergies, whilst tackling the different drivers. The Modern Slavery and Migration Envoy will work internationally to enrich our understanding and sharpen our interventions, enabling the UK to be at the forefront in international discussions on both issues.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>​One of the recommendations of the Independent Review of the Modern Slavery Act was the establishment of an international modern slavery envoy, to represent the UK in international discussions on modern slavery and to advance the government's objectives on this vital agenda.</p><p>HMG expects to announce the name of the successful candidate shortly.</p><p>The FCO have agreed with other relevant Government Departments that this role will be most effective if it is combined with the existing migration envoy role. In international settings, trafficking and migration are often covered in the same dialogues, and we believe that similar skills would be required for both components of the role. This also reflects the joint roles of some of our interlocutors in key capitals. However it is important that trafficking should not be seen through a purely migration prism, and vice versa.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The British Government continues to make representations on human rights concerns at the highest levels with the Mauritanian government. Most recently, the Head of the British Office in Nouakchott raised the issue of slavery alongside EU Heads of Mission in a meeting with the Mauritanian Prime Minister and eight other ministers on 9 December 2016.</p><p>The British Government also works internationally to tackle slavery. In December 2016, Baroness Anelay of St Johns met the UN Special Rapporteur on Modern Slavery, Ms Urmila Bhoola, and Mauritanian anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Abeid to discuss concerns about slavery in Mauritania.</p> more like this
