The Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and other Ministers continue to engage with our Gulf friends to encourage de-escalation and support Kuwait's mediation efforts. On 4 July, the Prime Minister called His Royal Highness The Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates to reiterate the need for all sides to take urgent steps to de-escalate the situation and restore Gulf Cooperation Council unity. The Foreign Secretary most recently visited the region on 7-9 July to deliver the same message.
more like this

We also remain deeply concerned at the detention of Taner Kilic, Amnesty International's Turkey Chair. The Foreign Secretary urged their release in his speech in Sydney on 27 July. As the Minister for Europe and the Americas set out in his recent statement on these arrests, both the Foreign Secretary and the Prime Minister have raised these arrests in recent discussions with Turkish counterparts. He has also raised the matter with the Turkish Ambassador to London. We continue to urge the Turkish authorities to uphold international standards with regard to the rule of law, including the presumption of innocence, and to protect fundamental rights including freedom of expression and assembly.
more like this

UN Security Council Resolution 2149 on CAR authorises a UN Peacekeeping Operation which will, as part of its mandate, be required to help to prevent sexual violence, and contribute to efforts to identify and prosecute perpetrators. The UK is also looking to provide funding to the African Union (AU)'s response to the urgent needs of CAR's victims of sexual violence, and to track and report on specific occurrences of sexual violence. We encourage CAR to endorse the Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict and to attend the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, in London in June 2014.
more like this

As we detailed in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Annual Human Rights report, released in April 2014, prison conditions in Iran remain a serious concern. The UK's non-resident Charge d'Affaires raised human rights with a range of Iranian government officials during his visit to Iran in March. The UK works closely with international human rights bodies and partners to encourage Iran to engage seriously on human rights issues.
more like this
