Further to an 8 January Troika (UK/ISA/Norway) (plus Canada) statement, on 9 January the British Ambassador spoke to Sudan's Acting Foreign Minister to reiterate our deep concern at the level of violence used by the Government of Sudan to disperse peaceful protests. He also urged the government to respect the Sudanese people's right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and to ensure those responsible for the deaths of protestors are held to account. At the Foreign Affairs Council in November, EU members discussed the political, economic, security and humanitarian situation in Sudan and collectively urged the Government to adopt political and economic reforms and guarantee unhindered humanitarian access to those in need of support. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/02/2019 answer text <p>The UK is concerned by the Government of Sudan's violent response to recent protests, including the use of lethal force and arbitrary detentions, and the targeting of medical facilities. On 8 January, alongside Troika (UK, USA, Norway) partners and Canada, we released a statement urging the Sudanese Government to respect the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, to ensure those responsible for the deaths of protestors are held to account, and calling for the immediate release of those held in detention without charge or trial. We continue to monitor the situation and raise our concerns at the highest levels. Our Troika statement of 9 April was clear that the UK and our Troika partners, Norway and the United States, will support a political transition in Sudan that credibly responds to protestor demands. Following the announcement of the removal of President Bashir and establishment of a military council led by General Ouf, we have become further concerned for the stability of the security situation. We judge that these are not credible, and do not assess there to be any particular ethnic dimension to the protests movement or the response to it.
