star this property answer text <p>Her Majesty's Government remains firmly committed to the promotion of human rights and the protection of Freedom of Religion or Belief in all countries. During my recent visit to Colombo and Jaffna I raised the importance of the Sri Lankan​ Government implementing in full, its commitments under UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/ 1, which reaffirms Resolution 30/1. Section 11 of this Resolution encourages the Government of Sri Lanka to investigate all attacks on members of religious minority groups and places of worship and hold perpetrators to account.</p><p>Through our bilateral work we fund a project supporting the development of two District Inter-Religious Committees in the Eastern Province, which bring together community leaders from different faith groups to discuss and mediate local issues of concern. We regularly discuss these issues with the Government and faith groups, and use public statements and social media to promote tolerance.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>During my visit in early October 2017 to Colombo and Jaffna, I raised with Foreign Minister Marapana the importance of the Sri Lankan government implementing in full its commitments under UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/1, which rolled over the commitments made under 30/1. These commitments include the return of all military-held private land, the operationalisation of the Office of Missing Persons, and the development of new counter-terrorism legislation in line with international human rights standards.​</p><p>The UK is committed to the full implementation of Resolution 34/1 and will continue to support the Government of Sri Lanka in its efforts to promote reconciliation and human rights.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The UK is closely monitoring delivery of the commitments made by the Government of Sri Lanka under UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/1, in collaboration with the UN, international partners, Government of Sri Lanka and civil society. I raised commitments most recently with Foreign Minister Marapana by telephone on 8 February.</p><p>During my visit to Colombo and Jaffna in October 2017 I also discussed the importance of the Sri Lankan government meeting its obligations in full under UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/1, which rolled over the commitments made under 30/1. Among these were establishing transitional justice mechanisms, including a credible accountability process for those most responsible for violations and abuses during Sri Lanka's civil war and the return of military held civilian land, particularly in the predominantly Tamil north and east.</p><p>The UK continues to support the Government of Sri Lanka in its efforts to promote reconciliation and human rights. The UK is also providing Sri Lanka with £6.6 million of Conflict, Stability and Security Fund funding over three years, to include support for police reform and training, reconciliation and peace building, and demining in the north of the country.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The UK is committed to the full implementation of UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/1, under which Sri Lanka committed to implement a range of measures to provide for human rights, truth-seeking, reconciliation, and devolution of political powers following the end of its civil war. I encouraged Foreign Minister Marapana to continue to make progress on these commitments when I met him in Colombo, in October 2017. Our High Commission in Sri Lanka regularly travel to the North and East (as did I to Jaffna during that visit) and meet with local groups, and where we have specific human rights concerns we raise these with the Sri Lankan government.</p><p>This year the UK will continue to encourage progress on human rights issues, including modern slavery, gender inequality, and reform of discriminatory laws.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The UK has not to date made representations to the Government of Sri Lanka on the establishment of a UN country office. The High Commissioner for Human Rights has a number of Special Rapporteurs who travel to Sri Lanka on his behalf and publish findings from their visits and the Government is engaging constructively with them. The UK is committed to working with the Government of Sri Lanka to implement its international human rights commitments.</p><p>I encouraged Foreign Minister Marapana to continue to make progress on these commitments when I met him in October 2017. The UK is also providing Sri Lanka with £6.6 million of Conflict, Stability and Security Fund funding over three years, to include support for police reform and training, reconciliation and peace building, and demining in the north of the country.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>I [Mr Field] met Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Marapana on 18 April in the margins of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. We discussed the progress made by Sri Lanka against its international commitments, and I set out the British Government's view that there is much remaining to be done, and we have been disappointed by the pace of change.</p><p>The UK led a strong joint statement at the March 2018 UN Human Rights Council, calling on the Government of Sri Lanka to redouble its efforts to deliver the commitments it made to the Council in 2015 and 2017. star this property answer text <p>I met Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Marapana on 18 April in the margins of the Commonwealth Summit. We discussed the recent intercommunal violence between Sinhala and Muslim communities in Sri Lanka. I welcomed the steps taken by the Sri Lankan government to bring the situation under control, and urged that those responsible should be identified and held to account through a free and open judicial process. I also encouraged continued progress on implementation of Sri Lanka's human rights and reconciliation commitments under UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/1.</p><p>The UK is providing Sri Lanka with £6.6 million of Conflict, Stability and Security Fund funding over three years until 2019 to improve human rights, and we are currently funding a range of projects in support of this. One of these projects supports interfaith dialogue, aimed at promoting cohesion between those of different backgrounds and beliefs.</p> more like this
