star this property answer text <p>​As made clear alongside Troika partners (US and Norway) on 4 June, we condemn the violent attacks by Sudanese security forces against peaceful protestors in Sudan this week, which left many civilians dead or injured. The UK calls for the human rights of all Sudanese people to be respected, the resumption of the political process with the protestors and the opposition, and an agreed transfer of power to a civilian-led government, as demanded by the Sudanese people, in a swift, orderly and peaceful manner. On 6 June, I summoned the Sudanese Ambassador to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to express our grave concerns at the use of violence against civilians by the Sudanese authorities.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The UK is engaging with the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and with the a range of opposition groups and the protest movement in Sudan. On 6 June, I summoned the Sudanese Ambassador to the UK to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to express our grave concerns at the use of violence against civilians by the Sudanese authorities and to call for the resumption of negotiations that lead to the peaceful handing over of power to civilian leadership. This message has also been firmly delivered in Sudan by our Ambassador to the Deputy Head of the TMC and through the public statements we have made alongside our Troika partners (the USA and Norway).</p> more like this

We welcome the leadership of the AU has shown in suspending Sudan from the AU, in condemning the recent violence and in calling for a swift move to civilian-led government. The UK is working closely with the AU to promote comprehensive peace negotiations through our role in the Troika, alongside the USA and Norway, building on our long standing support to the AU's mediation efforts to encourage peace and Security in Sudan.</p> more like this

We are working across the G7 workstreams to ensure continued progress on gender equality, particularly in the Sahel and across Sub-Saharan Africa. We will push for ambitious Summit outcomes that tackle violence against women and girls, promote girls’ education and women’s economic empowerment, and support movements to end child marriage and FGM. We only hold data centrally for UK-based staff.</p><p>The number of FCO UK-based staff who are Sikhs is 0.75 per cent. The most recent UK census data estimated that Sikhs are 0.7 per cent of the UK population.</p><p>The diversity characteristic used to report this is religion.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>I have not had any discussions with the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on supporting the Nigerian Government to reduce the spread of false information on social media. In October, I discussed the issue with Lai Mohammed, Nigerian Minister for Information and Culture, setting out the steps the British government was taking to regulate use of social media for party political purposes and encouraged steps to tackle misinformation online. The BBC World Service in Nigeria, funded by the British Government, has broadcast a report on Africa Eye called &quot;Like. Share. Kill&quot;, which documents how Nigerian police say false information on Facebook is killing people.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We are concerned that false information on social media platforms is stoking longstanding rivalries and fuelling intercommunal violence across multiple states of Nigeria. False reports and images of gruesome attacks, often with no link to Nigeria, are regularly circulated as evidence of intercommunal violence, prompting reprisal attacks.</p><p>We are working with international partners to support the Nigerian government in their strategic response, and encouraging them to address the complex causes of the violence.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>​We have no organised programmes helping African states with disinformation, although we would consider any specific requests for support.</p><p>HMG communications experts already work in Posts across Africa, supporting proactive and reactive media and communications activity in African countries. Over the coming months, we will hire more communications specialists to provide greater resource for proactive communications and campaigns in Africa. Such campaigns could be used to help counter misinformation, where needed.</p><p>The government is supporting BBC World Service to expand in Africa, including on digital platforms.</p> more like this
