star this property answer text <p>As a first step to tackle the root causes of the conflict, we have been clear that a wide range of voices, including from women, local actors and civil society groups, must be heard in the peace process. This will make it more likely that a sustainable settlement is found. These groups will also help hold the government and other parties to account. Our funding is enabling the South Sudan Council of Churches, through the National Action Plan for Peace, to lead mediation and reconciliation efforts between national level leaders who have the power to stop the conflict. At the local level we are supporting a range of peace building activities, including funding the Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System (CEWERS), which aims to reduce conflict by helping communities to identify small incidents and resolve issues peacefully before they escalate to violent conflict.</p> more like this

In 2009, the World Bank estimated that more than 60 percent of Sudan's national budget was spent on Security and Defence. In the absence of reliable information from the Government of Sudan, our assumption is that such spending constitutes between 60 and 70 percent of Sudan's national budget.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Revitalised Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) was signed on 12 September 2018. The Parties listed in R-ARCSS are: the Transitional Government of National Unity of the Republic of South Sudan; the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army-In Opposition; the South Sudan Opposition Alliance; former detainees; and a range of other smaller political parties. A diverse range of stakeholders from civil society and the region, including representatives from the church, business, and women's groups, also signed. The agreement can be found on the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission website. The most significant party to the conflict which did not sign R-ARCSS is the National Salvation Front (known as NAS) led by General Thomas Cirillo.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>As part of his official duties the then British Defence Attache to Sudan, alongside fellow international Defence Attaches based in Khartoum, attended a Sudanese Armed Forces military parade in May 2017. The Rapid Support Forces formally joined the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in January 2017, and their graduation ceremony therefore took place during the parade under the auspices of the SAF, although this had not been made clear in advance.</p> more like this

We have encouraged the US Administration to bring forward detailed proposals for a viable Israel-Palestinian peace agreement that addresses the legitimate concerns of both parties. We continue to believe the best way to achieve this is through substantive peace talks between the parties leading to a two-state solution.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The reports emerged after the UK-Sudan Strategic Dialogue. We raised our concerns with the Government of Sudan on 9 May. We reiterated the UK's and the international community's expectation that unilateral cessations of hostilities must be observed by both sides. While presenting his credentials to the President of Sudan on 14 May, our Ambassador took the opportunity to repeat the importance of observing the unilateral ceasefire. The UK Defence Attaché raised the issue with the Sudanese Armed Forces on the same date.</p><p>A communique from the Fifth Round is available on the British Government's website.</p> more like this
